I'm forwarding this message I received yesterday...
---- As many of you know, Hurricane Katrina is baring down on the Louisiana Gulf Coast with it's sights set on New Orleans. It is an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane that will devastate New Orleans if it makes a direct hit. Many people are not able to evacuate. I think almost everyone on this email list knows Angela Torres. She was not able to evacuate because of her mother being in the hospital, and she has been forced to ride out the storm there. I would like to ask everyone to keep Angela and her family in their thoughts and prayers along with the rest of the people who were not able to evacuate for whatever reason. Thank you. I know Angela will appreciate your prayers. Clint Bowers P.S. Please forward this email around. Angela, her family, and the citizens of New Orleans need as many prayers as they can get.

John the phone lines are all down. I heard that all critical care patiets were being sent to the superdome but I also understand that they too are now being evacuated. Can't call Angela as even the cell lines are down. Be in prayer.

Richard Exnicios posted the following on Fencing Net when someone posted asking how he and Nancy were:We are safe in Atlanta. We got out Sunday morning and drove for 16 hrs (going 5 mph) to safety.
We have NOT been able to confirm the safety of many of our fellow New Orleans and Mississippi fencers. There is no communication in or out of the area and cell phone rarely work.
If anyone knows any information please email me directly exnicios@bellsouth.net

Richard has also posted this to Fencing Net: As you know Hurricane Katrina has hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast VERY hard. We do not know what if anything is left of our homes, business, and clubs. We do know that some fencers will be returning to a total loss. In addition to the loss of our homes, business and clubs most people now have no source of income.
We have set up a fund to help the fencers affected by Katrina. The Fencing Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit and all donations are tax deductable.
We can accept any form of donation!
Make checks Payable to: The Fencing Foundation c/o 2249 Guinevere Way Atlanta, GA 30345
you can also use Paypal for credit card donations. The e-mail address of that account is fencinginfo@bellsouth.net. If you have any questions regarding how this works, you can send e-mail to that same address.
All contributors will receive a tax letter for use when you claim your charitable donation and we will notify you of how the funds were used.
Thank you all for supporting your fencing friends in need.
Please pass this on to anyone and everyone!

There's also a few threads on Fencing Net. This is the main one. www.fencing.net/forums/fencing-discussion/t19361.htmlI also saw this post out of Baton Rouge: Glad everyone loves me. I'm ok down here in BR. but new orleans is in a pickle. i'm with the national guard, buthave yet to be called up. can't get in touch with my unit. this is a terrible event in history of the US. if you can help out any way you can, i would appretiate it, the people of LA, MS, AL will appreciate it. everyone take care, don't know when i'll be able to get back on.
cisco
If any fencers from the areas hit by Katrina can chime in (you don't have to be a member to post on this thread) and let others know you are well, please do. Also, if you have news of our colleagues out there please let us know.

The Hawkins are who Jon Carr went to stay with so they are checked in - no power, much damage to the city.
All the Ridgeland and Clinton fencers are checked in - without power and spotty communication, though.
All the Oxford and Ole Miss fencers are checked in - they have power/phones.
The Karps (Ed, Anna-Marie) - Nancy Exnicios writes that they are in Houston.
Scott Jennings, (Shreveport but attends college in N.O.) was leaving for school the day Katrina hit and therefore is safe in Shreveport.

A.J. St. Germain from Houma, LA, has checked in. He was evacuated to Texas ahead of the storm. A friends sends word that he is back home in Houma and his house is intact!!

A message from Terry Harkey:Dear fencing officers, club leaders, fencers and fencer enthusiasts, You may have noticed there was a recent incredible attempt by "Mother Nature" to wipe out the Louisiana Division. While she did temporarily halt fencing at Tulane, New Orleans Athletic Club, New Orleans Fencing Academy, Ben Franklin High, Mississippi Gulf Coast Club, Ridgeland, Clinton, Hattiesburg, and Laurel, she left the Baton Rouge and Lafayette areas pretty much in tact therefore - she failed! Fencing is still alive in South Louisiana! Seriously, though, the damage to the fencing clubs and personal lives of fencers and their families is considerable, but I am so happy to report that US fencers are reaching out to ask how they can help! How can YOU as members and leaders of the Southwest Section help? Immediately there are things you can do that actually won't COST you money! If there are fencers relocated to your areas (and we already know there are some in Dallas and some in Houston!) PLEASE make these fencers aware of your desire to help by offering free fencing at your various clubs and the use of fencing equipment while they are here. Let me know who you are and what you are offering (free floor fees, free lessons, equipment loans, transportation, housing availability) and I will post it with the other information that we're collecting for displaced fencers. Most of the fencers have no way to get to their money, since most of their banks are not online yet. They need to know we support them. Go to your Red Cross shelter and volunteer to assist ...AND WHILE YOU'RE THERE.... wear an OBVIOUS fencing t-shirt which may help locate displaced fencers. Maybe small groups of fencers could go to the bigger shelters? Take a sticky notepad or other paper and offer to get messages to their family by your own email or phone if there is service. (Let me know you found them!) You can read the latest news on fencers in that area here www.almdiv.org/News_folder/2006/katrinanews.htm Check the list of those we haven't accounted for and see if you know where they may be. Every person is important and they appreciate your help. Eventually, (but not yet!) we are going to ask for equipment donations to clubs and individuals. Plans are formulating from the top down in the fencing world to help our friends in Mississippi and Louisiana. Be prepared to join in as they become reality. And thank you guys in advance - I know you - you're the best! Sincerely, Terry Harkey Secretary Ark-La-Miss Division of the USFA

This was on a classical fencing group:
Just a brief note to let folks know that we survived Katrina.
Monday, we fled our home in the country and went to stay with my parents in Jackson, Mississippi. However, Katrina was still a category two hurricane when it passed through Jackson that day and so from Monday afternoon until late Friday evening we were without electricity, clean water, ice for keeping food cold, TV, land phone (occasional service), cell phone service, and internet (occasional service), (and a lot of other things). My parents (who's home we fled to) received a good bit of damage to their place. Monday, we kept hearing trees cracking and then crashing, praying they wouldn't fall through the house on top of us. The sound the wind made as it passed through was amazing and scary. Their neighborhood now looks like a bombed out war zone with every house having whole trees downed many crashed onto houses and cars and numerous telephone poles snapped into. Power lines were down everywhere. Wal-Mart quickly emptied out of almost everything within a day. And we had to wait six hours in a several mile line of cars to fill up our van with gas Thursday.
We returned to our home on Friday and ironically it has only minor structural and water damage. Our neighbors were not as fortunate. Mysteriously, my boys' trampoline is nowhere to be found. It's probably in some farmer's field nearby.
In spite of what we have been through we have much to be thankful for and now that we are getting back on our feet we have turned our attention to helping those less fortunate. Many Gulf Coast refugees who are now homeless are staying in the coliseum (indoor stadium) at the fairgrounds in Jackson. They need so many things that we all take for granted.
I suppose the rest of you who live in areas not affected by Katrina have been able to watch it all on TV. I'm still without TV. Our Antenna is gone and our satellite dish is not working. The Mississippi Gulf Coast took a heavy hit and many of the smaller towns down there are completely gone, others have major destruction. A number of fencers and fencing instructors I know down there have lost everything. One fencing master I know of chose to remain in New Orleans and we have not been able to get in touch with him. Unlike the MS coast where most of the buildings were flattened, New Orleans still has many of its buildings, but is under water and those who remained are living in hellish conditions.
Thanks for your prayers.
Blessings, Rez Johnson

The following are the recent updates to the site set up by Terry Harkey:9/5/05
Eugene Hamori is NOT listed on MSNBC's safe list. Other info said he had stayed in N.O. No one has heard from him, but that is not abnormal given the horrific communication problems.
9/6/05
Michael Dardant and his family (and cat) are safe in New Iberia praying that the looting in the Quarter didn't affect their house.
Curtis Purcell checked in from NYU - he and his family are safe.
Hattiesburg Fencers seem to all be ok. The town is slowly recovering.
Aaron Matheney write "I've been in Little Rock AR but I just enrolled at Latech in Ruston La. I was going to Xavier but for obvious reasons I have to attend Latech for the next year."
9/7/05
Benjamin Long and his family are in Sarasota, Florida, where Benjamin started high school today.
Andersons, John & Allison, Hannah, Noah, Sara of Bay St Louis, MS listed ALIVE (looks like right family, although town does not match exactly.) Francisco Alecha (also Enriqueta) of New Orleans, LA listed ALIVE: Evacuated to Houston TX - CNN
Here is a link to a list of fencers NOT heard from

From the recent USFA Board of Directors Meeting:
In the wake of Katrina the USFA will be listing some relief charities on the website, the grant committee will give priority to club in the affected areas this season, and the USFA, nationally, will act as a clearinghouse for information about members (health, locations, etc.), and donations, either financial or of equipment.
