For the moment, this thread is off-topic as far as fencing is concerned, but she's pointed pretty much straight for some of us. The Galveston fencers will be under the evacuation order by 6 PM today.
So will some Clear Lake fencers who live in Bacliff.
Yours truly lives in Dickinson. My wife and I have until 2 AM tonight/tomorrow morning. I guess this put a crimp in the new intro fencing class that started up at College of the Mainland last Friday. (Nuts! the class actually made with 8 students!)
League City, where a lot of other CLFC fencers live goes into mandatory evac at 6 tomorrow.
I do not know the situation for the Brazosport fencers.
Our friends in Robstown and Corpus Christi also have reasons to be concerned.
Looks like my wife will be staying in Houston with her father. I work for a security service and have an account in Sugar Land. I am organizing my crew and will stand the storm at the client's facility to baby sit it, should Rita continue aiming for the Houston-Galveston area.
Suffice that posts here and updates to the rogue site might get kind of sporadic.

Dickinson to Sugar Land? That's a pretty good commute. Where do you work?

As I feared, Rita is beginning to impact the fencing community. I noticed that Salle Mauro has cancelled the saber camp slated for September 25 (presumably as a result of Rita). I left a query on the Houston Cup board regarding this weekend's tounrament, as well.
Oh, and for fox, I work in the Fluor building.

The tournament scheduled for September 24-25, 2005, has been canceled by the organizers due to the approaching Hurricane Rita. This tournament, known both as Houston Cup #1 and Houston Cup #2, was to be held by, and at, Alliance Fencing Academy.

I'm off to Louisana. I live on the northeast side and trailers don't dig hurricanes.
Hope y'all stay safe.

Nemo: Wimberley is only a 20 minute drive from here. Come on by the ATAC/TSU practices (Monday-Thursday 6:30 until 10:00 at Jowers Gym on the TSU campus). No floor fees. Just come on by! Visiting fencers are always welcome! Bring your equipment!

Right now it looks like Corpus Christi will NOT be ordering a Rita on the rocks, which is fine with me. However, I'm praying for those folks north of us. Godspeed... take care and stay safe!

Houston sorta dodged a bullet with that one. Can't say the same for Beaumont and Port Arthur.
I'm OK. House still standing. Power is on and I have ice in my drinks. I wonder how our Spindletop Cavaliers are doing.
I never did make it to Louisiana. d**n traffic. Weathered the storm at an aunt's.

I finally got off from my job site around 8PM Saturday. I spent the night with my wife at her father's house. We got home to Dickinson late Sunday morning. Happily we just had a bunch of tree limbs down.
It seems like the Houston crowd fared well enough.
I am more concerned now for the our friends at the Spindletop Cavaliers. If any of you guys see this, please post and let us know you're okay.

I waited too late to get the gasoline needed for a long trip so I just fortified the house and rode it out.
(Am I the only person who has gotten sick of the phrase "hunker down" from media over-use?)
I got a little rain and lot of wind, but no substantial damage.

I got only as far as Carmine before running out of gas. I was finally able to get a friend from Brenham to pick me up.

Well, we made it back from Thibodaux, LA. We headed there last Wednesday to weather the storm and I think we received more weather than Houston LOL. C'est La Vie. The destruction we saw (on the trip back) was incredible. There was visible damage from Jeanerette (Hwy. 90 in Iberia Parish) to Winnie, TX. That is 200 miles worth of destruction. Absolutely amazing. If I hadn't had everyone with me; I would have stopped for pictures. The destruction in Lake Charles was astounding from what we could see. You had to take the 210 loop because I-10 is closed due to damage on the bridge. I have never seen anything like it and I grew up there. The folks that were in Cameron for Audrey (the previous benchmark) say it was worse. Cameron, LA is gone. It convinced me that anything over a Cat 2 is worth leaving for. Lake Charles is 50 miles inland and the devastation was incredible. We couldn't go in to the city (well, we could have used back roads but felt it wasn't worth the risk of angering the large men with automatic weapons LOL) but what we saw from the road was amazing. The power wind has over 100 year or so oaks is really incredible.
I am glad I left. I will leave again. The damage left an indelible impression on me. I hope to never see anything like it again. My Mom and Aunt are from Lake Charles and are staying with me in Houston. Calcasieu Parish is closed until further notice.

My friend Matt put together a running tally of Officers and Board members from the Clear Lake Fencing Club, so if any from CLFC were wondering what happened to everyone...
Nicole Trojanowski -- home base temporarily got relocated from her home to her father's home. Currently e-mail-impaired for reasons primarily having nothing to do with Rita. Matt Delevoryas -- went to, and returned from Fort Worth. Nothing interesting to report, besides that all the CLFC stuff in my possession is still intact and will be back Thursday the 29th. John Trojanowski -- worked straight through the storm, although the home base he wasn't at got relocated from his home to his father-in-law's home. Currently e-mail-impaired for reasons primarily having nothing to do with Rita. Damian Berntsen -- is fine. The CLFC stuff (seven weapons and about four jackets) is still intact and will be back Thursday the 29th. Don Cravey -- evacuated and returned. Jerry Dunaway -- evacuated and returned. Rod Fleming -- went to Krum, Texas, and has return plans yesterday (Tuesday). Bill Satterwhite -- evacuated and returned.
I guess this tracks our part in the Great Gulf Coast Diaspora of 2005

My family took 15 hours evacuating to College Station where they met up with Dave Mayerich (who procurred a vacant condo for them to stay in), and Liz and Dan Gorman. I had to stay at the hospital to help evac all our patients. Once done, they informed us we could catch an Air Guard C-130 to NAS Ft Worth. We waited a long time for clearance to take off from Ellington, but the air conditioning worked great. I faired better than my friends and family stuck on highways in intense heat. My Dallas family took good care of me and then various family members ferried me in stages from Dallas to Waco, Waco to a rendevous point between there and College Station (where Liz and Dave picked me up), to College Station to meet up with my husband and dog, and home to Galveston. A few branches and big piles of leaves met us at the house, but we had electricity and are fine. Our prayers go out to all those who are still recovering. GFC didn't meet last Monday, but will be back on track tomorrow at Wright-Cuney gym in Galveston.
