Andrey Geva informs me that Olexsiy Ivanov, head Ukrainian coach at the Specialized Fencing School of Olympic Reserve in Kharkov Ukraine, FIE rated saber director, coach of world cup fencers, will be in town as his guest for a one day camp/seminar June 25th at the Alliance Woodlands location and be a guest at his Woodlands camp June 20-24th. Coach Ivanov will also be at at the Post Oak YMCA evenings begining June 13th. Good opportunity for saber work with a coach who has molded many world cup level fencers. Coach Ivanov comes as a guest at the recommendation of Yuri Gellman, US Olympic saber coach.

Oleksii moved to BCFA. He offers classes for ALL 3 weapons at the main location Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Practices start at 6pm.
If you decide to start fencing there it's $100 a month tuition (which includes 1 lesson from the Maestro a week) refer to the website for more specifics but I think that's pretty nice deal for a high level coach.
If you'd like more information regarding the program just follow up on the thread and I'll answer them accordingly.

The road goes on forever and the party never ends...
(one exalt to David Sierra for using the dance metaphor before I could)
In truth, it will be nice for them to have a high level coach to go with such a nice physical plant.

Anyone know why chose to leave? We're getting mixed signals from people.

kd5mdk is from the South Texas Division.
They don't play musical coaches like we do.
What I hear (and don't take this for 100 %) is that the split was coming either way. If Oleksii had not left when he did, rumor has it Geva was going to cut the cord before much longer. I won't comment on the "why"s that I've heard. I hope to show up at both BCFA and Alliance from time to time.

Oleksii will be at the BCFA Houston location M-W-F and the Woodlands location Tuesday and Saturdays. He turned down 4 other opportunities in NYC, Columbus Ohio, New Jersey and Chicago.
Louise is treating him with a lot of respect (as he deserves) and he pretty much has free reign.
Joe and Tim are moving there as well.

When the topic came up last night I mentioned to my girlfriend I assumed he would have to go to Mauro, as neither KB nor BCFA had much in the way of sabre. With Oleksii, his son, Joe and Tim moving, BCFA gets a complete sabre program ready-made.

Alex has been coming to my club for approx. 4 months on Tuesdays and giving lessons, and you would be surprised at what he has built in that time in only one day a week. You have to remember that my oldest saber fencers are 13, with several recruited 14 year olds, but I have approximately 9 - 14 saber fencers in the Tuesday and Thursday nights. Many of the adults in the section don't see them, but you will in a couple of years. My epeeists are beginning to make a mark in this area after 2 years of fencing and you will see the saber fencers do the same soon. Alex does not need to recruit fencers, he will build a program from scratch like I am with my kids. He has good students already in Joe/Tim/Dimitri, but he will take students that have never fenced before and make them very good if they will listen to him. It is not Alex's style to recruit other students from other clubs, and he is just a great ambassador for the sport. What this makes is 3 strong inner city/Woodlands programs and my little club in Katy. I remember when there were no coaches active in Houston, so this is a welcome change. There may be some moving of active students, but the real change is that each strong program will keep recruiting in its same manner and growing and now BCFA will be on the same track. The Gulf Coast Division just got stronger if this works out.

My sense of this is the same as Augie's. Three large, strong clubs is better than two. (Four as Katy Blades grows).
Alliance will continue as a strong club. I once felt (when Tomasz was at BCFA) that there was a real chance that the three largest clubs might shake down to specialties (allowing all 3 would continue to teach all 3 weapons):
Salle Mauro - foil
Alliance - epee
BCFA - sabre
It may yet go that way.
Let me add that, while I have only met him a few times (and split referee duties on a foil pool with him once), the man just seems to really enjoy anything that involves fencing. Let me chime in with something nemo posted elsewhere. He is a fine referee.
Anywhere he teaches in our division will make our area better (so let's not run him off, please).

On the subject of specialty clubs (even ones that teach all 3 weapons), Salle Mauro's goal is to be the best club in all 3 weapons. We have some pretty strong epee and saber as well as our foil and while we certainly have a reputation as a foil club, we feel we aren't slouches in the other 2 either.
This is meant as no disrespect to anyone else, just that our goal for ourselves is to be the best.

I must point out that we have coaches in this Division who are making strong contribution to fencing as well. Example: Dolphina (BCFA), Sabina (Alliance), Skopik, (KB) and other coaches from Salle Mauro, Clear Lake area, South Houston HS, etc. For information purposes coach Alexie, is not as a saber coach, he is a three weapon's coach.

I don't think anyone was disparaging the other coaches. I think there is pretty wide agreement that we have several fine coaches in this division.

And apparently the news continues with more fencers moving into BCFA territory to join Oleksii and his team. Apparently more sabre fencers and Epee's too!

I wonder how much this will complicate the Team composition at Summer Nationals (in so much as you can only represent one club per year)

And apparently the news continues with more fencers moving into BCFA territory to join Oleksii and his team. Apparently more sabre fencers and Epee's too! Alias, you seem to know a lot but I heard this straight from the horse's mouth, that Louise is drawing new plans to expand her facilities to accommodate the rising tide of fencers moving over to BCFA from Alliance AND Salle Mauro! Could this be the beginning of a new chapter in this division when we finally have one el supremo club owned by one el supremo lady who is also the el supremo boss of the division, with one el supremo coach who is finally going to teach us how to fence saber, epee and foil? I hear rumors that team Hurley feels the need for a professional coach and facility and are booking U-haul for the move to Houston as soon as they get back from Korea... and the French sisters cannot be far behind. Ah, the beauty of free market in action! Think of it, with this economy of scale and everybody just in one swell club, the monthly fees will go down faster than the price of flat screen TV! And no more fights about USFA sanctioned tournaments and all the rest. Everyone will be an A in no time! Aren't we lucky or what? Question: what are Andrey, Mauro, Augie, Oliver and all the other coaches going to do??? Maybe they should go after the job offers (4 or 5) Oleksi turned down around the country. This way everybody wins and we are all a happy family...for a while. Unfortunately, wishing won't make it happen
