How can you be sure the event will be sanctioned as an award rating event? There is no longer anything you can count on anymore. Wait; the event was held at BCFA!
Congrats Jack! You deserve it, judging by the folks you got by to earn it.
Way to go!!!

Can we just congratulate Mr. Hudson on his fine fencing and put the politics in another thread? Both have their place, but let's leave the spotlight on Jack in this thread. I hear his bout with Davis Jno-Finn for the gold was a delight to watch. From the rankings (two Skopiks in 3rd & 4th) he had to get by one of them, as well. Nice job from a fine fencer and fine young man.

As fox noted, both Jack and Davis are a joy to watch. Neither gives anything away. Jack has a fine sense of timing and an awe-inspiring lunge. I am truly sorry I missed it. Congratulations to Mr. Hudson.

No.
Jack is a friend as well as a fantastic fencer, and I'm very happy for him. He earned his "A" and will show he is worthy of it.
Now check out the results of the Heavy Metal held at AnM. Not only were several fencers CHEATED out of their rating in the D and under, but in the Open event, a nice young man I fenced in warm-up EARNED his "C" but was CHEATED out of it. Three events occured, with SOMEONE resposible for each, that resulted in this event not being sanctioned.
1:SOMEONE seriously into rules discovered a situation that could be used to exclude this event from USFA SANCTIONING
2:It was reported TO SOMEONE that the school in question MIGHT NOT have been a USFA Member at some time.
3:SOMEONE decided this would be a great opportunity to punish this club for daring to hold their event at a location other than at the Houston Athletic Club, otherwise known as BCFA.
SO...Piss Off
One fencer earns his ranking and gets it, but many others don't, and I'm supposed to be nice about it?
The day I earn my "B" and don't get it is the day this playground crap ends for someone.

I see.
My mistake and my apologies.
I, of course, presume that your statement that sanction was denied because it was not held at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center is a verifiable fact and not an assumption.

SO...Piss Off Ah, Captain, my Captain... First of all, please note that there is a "quote" function built into this forum (as with most forums). You can quote the entire post and just delete the parts you don't need. Second, if you are right, that sanction was withheld because Heavy Metal wasn't held at the House of Lepie, then I suppose the Cougar Call to Arms, the Gobblers Revenge, the Fete de Lune, the two St. Thomas tournaments, the Gulf Coast JO Qualifiers and pretty much anything hosted by Katy Blades and/or Alliance were ALL denied sanction. Wow.

The location had nothing to do with the Heavy Metal being denied sanction. The division chair was very helpful in trying to get the event sanctioned. This is from first-hand knowledge.
And on topic to the thread -- congrats to Jack.

Congrats to Jack! Truly well deserved.
P.S. A cynic would point out the relationship between the venue, current division president, and USFA sanctioning. For people from neighboring divisions considering attendance to GC tournaments, the uncertainty of USFA sanctioning is an issue. The GC division ought to clearly indicate with at least a month whether events are USFA sanctioned or NOT. Not a last minute deal behind close doors. This is one of the issues that brought attention of the National office to the GC division in the past. Furthermore, with the cost of gas, a shared ride needs to be arranged among fencers from neighboring divisions let alone farther divisions within the section. That is the reason to make clear USFA sanctioning ahead of time, to have truly the spirit of Open events. Just my 2 cents!! I want to make clear that I am not criticizing the achievement of Jack, he deserved earning the A rating. However, STX fencers were not sure whether this event was or not going to be sanctioned and chose not to participate. Not a single STX fencer participated in the mixed Epee event.

Actually, to be fair, its kinda hard for a Division to specify which events are NOT sanctioned (the potential list could be... well, huge). I believe its reasonable for them to say which ones ARE.

The latest on our friend Jack: After another successful weekend on home soil, Jack has now propelled himself to the #5 spot on the Great Britain Cadet points list, and sits at #24 on the Great Britain Junior Points list. Finishing 7th (over 100 fencers total) overall and first out of the cadets, Jack went from #21 on the cadet list to #5. The BSC Tournament allowed him enough points to make his debut on the Junior points list. If y'all think Davis has been waiting patiently to fence Jack again, think about those British fencers. They are so not happy. Especially the guy at the bottom of the Cadet World Cup Team who might be losing his spot to our Jack! Congratulations Jack on a Job Well Done!!!

Jack just came back from the UK, and fenced in their 5th national point meet. He was ranked 21st in cadet after participating in one this summer.
There were 100 in the junior meet, and the top 38 point holders had a bye. A round of pools were fenced, and then the fencers were reseeded. Jack was 1 after the pools and went into the second round of pools 39th. He came out 18th, and made the top 8, placing 7th. He lost to the top Junior in the UK.
He is 14, and going through a growth spurt. He does pretty well locally, (ask Jett about the last 3 GC tournaments). He currently is 5th in Cadet and 24th in Junior despite only participating in 2 of their 5 qualifiers.
The UK coach was banging on his conditioning, but after flying over and having jet lag I can think other things a 14 year old can worry about in a Junior event.
Congrats Jack.
FOR WHATEVER REASON KBs POST DID NOT SHOW UP. SORRY FOR THE REPOST.

Jack recently got 9th in the Junior British Nationals. He was not as successful in the Cadet. There is no weight or shim test, and the grounded strips testing are an issue.
They also used the Junior ladies as directors and a few of them forgot the score in DEs. Tough when you lose the several touches in a 15-14 bout.
He can't go to the Bobcat, because he will be in Bonn, Germany. Three years of Cadet World Cups is a great experience for a 14 year old. Sorry Davis, you don't get any chance for redemption.
I think he is 4th Cadet and 19th Junior despite only 2 of the 5 national events.

In Germany, Jack made the 2nd day. There were about 400 signed up for Cadet Epee.
I know that only 5 of the 17 GBR fencers made it that far. It will be interesting how well he does, and not bad if he has 2 more years.
