In a foil bout, Fencer Zaphod parries a simple attack by Fencer Dent, however, Zaphod's riposte misses. Both fencers then launch immediate, simultaneous remises. Both land on valid target and we have two colored lights.
Who, if either, would get the touch?

Dent. After the riposte misses, he has an opportunity to respond, which the immediate in your description indicates he took.

Dent. After the riposte misses, he has an opportunity to respond Distance parry, right? I'm trying to understand sabre so I can help the aspiring young "artists" in the club.

The call in fox's action is left attack (Dent) is parried, right riposte is no, remise left, remise right (you don't have to mention the last remise). Touch left.
The phrase "distance riposte" has fallen out of vogue. In the event that Zaphod missed because Dent jumped back the call is the same, but you can say short instead of no to describe the riposte. No is still entirely acceptable and by some people preferred.

As you are only supposed to use the words which have hand signals attached (or pretty much), "no" is the appropriate way to express what happened.

so, in the event they both remise simultaneously, the remise of the attack has priority over the remise of the riposte?

I wouldn't call it simultaneous remises. Dent was probably remise-ing while Zaphoid was riposting. Dent was taking a risk there, but Zaphy messed up and missed his chance for riposting. Now it's Dent's turn and whaddya know, he hit. This is how I usually saw that situation. If it's more like Zaphoid riposted then missed, then they both went at each other right away after the missed riposte as described in the original post, it's still Dent's because, like has already been said, Zaphoid had his chance and fudged it. This might not be as easy to see. It would be the same as if I lunged, missed, then remised while you simply did a short lunge and hit me. Attack from me no, attack from you arrives. Point you. If Zaph had riposted, missed, they both hesitated long enough and then both went, then it'd just be simultaneous, nothing done, enguarde. I think so anyway. Let me know if I'm wrong.
