We are forming the Gulf Coast Girl's Fencing Association to promote young girl's fencing in our area and will have a tournament on May 9, 2009 at Bayou Fencing---Y10, 12, 14 girls (all weapons). It will be a scholarship tournament. We thank Augie Skopik of Katy Blades for donating a Saturday of his protected weekend for this event. Posters to be mailed out ASAP!
Our area girls get very little opportunities to exclusively fence other girls--usually at SYC , NACS, and NATS only. They practice and bout in tournaments with boys primarily which doesn't always prepare them for girl only events and may actually prevent some girls from ever trying the sport--afraid of the boys!
Augie has also agreed to open his club on Sunday afternoons for the Association to hold weekly "girl's only fencing practices". Augie will turn over the keys in the afternoon, leave and we'll lock up that night. There will be very few rules: mainly no coaches allowed (so other coaches can feel safe that their students won't be poached); parents attend as observers only; all weapons allowed; and clean up any mess that is made. The parents can alternate snacks, etc.
Because not all girls take the competitive tournament path, this will be a good chance for them to socially interact--and also try to skewer each other! We also plan to have at least one social event during the season for everyone to get together.
Please give us any ideas, suggestions, etc.---we value your experience---and watch for the May Tournament poster, email address, practice times, etc. that we will soon be finalizing.
Thanks, Bill Davie
