I don't know why this popped into my head. This was from an event a couple of years ago, not too long after I had taken my referee exam.
I was refereeing a women's epee DE. I don't recall the ratings level of the fencers involved, but want to think it was one of the earlier, more lop-sided DEs (24th seed vs 4th seed or something like that).
The event ended within the first necounter with a high single-digit lead. Both fencers signed the DE slip and the winner went to take it to the bout committee.
Before the next bout began the loser approached me and stated she felt she was left in an unfair disadvantage. It seems her opponent kept sticking out her tongue and she (and her father) felt I should have carded the fencer in question. It encounter was only for a moment and they walked away.
I recall the distinct feeling of "what the?"
I will added that, with an ungrounded strip, I will admit the focus of my vision was mostly below head height. Then too, I don't feel sticking out a tongue is exactly "disorderly fencing."

I could easily construe it as unsportsmanlike conduct. A friendly warning then a black card. But then I have issues with things like that.

She saw this through the mask? I know some people stick out their tounges when concentrating real hard. Could be a bad thing in epee. A good head shot might make you bite it off.
