I am in the market for FIE foil blades. What are the characteristics of some choices out there? And what are the best choices that are under or around $100? Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, Terry Unrein, your local USFA Armorer here. The Best Blades for foil. HMMMMMM! Well it depends on your fencing style. Are you a flicker or a point man? The most common blade for flicking (and I am talking high end) are the BF (Blaise Frer) blades from France, less expensive is the Priuer Chavalier line. I hear and see good and bad about (50/50) all blades these days, Some prefer the Leon Paul Golubitsky Pro's others the BF the budget minded use the Chavalier and STM but I cannot recommend the STM's as there is a batch out there that were not annealed properly...the gold ones mainly. If you have one of these and you encounter a lot of resistance when canting your tang do yourself a favor and leave it, if forced it will break. My personal favorite blade, I am a point man, is the Viniti from Russia. EXCELLENT Blades for the money, about $70.00 unwired from most vendors. These are FIE maraging blades. These are my experiences and opinions only and do not represent the FIE's, USFA's or any vendors interests. If questioned I will disavow any knowledge of this question and it's answer...LOL! I do have to maintain my objectivity as an official. Suffice to say that any blade that fits your fencing style is the proper fit for you regardless of it's price or certification. I started fencing in '96 and used $15.00 B&G blades until recently. When buying know the flexibility thast suits you best, Highly flexible for flicking or Stiffer for point control. Good luck and get out there and fence!
