Even though Nationals just ended, I realize that soon the clubs in the Gulf Coast Division will meet for our annual scheduling session for the 2009-2010 fencing year.
I thought, for the benefit of the clubs, I'd try to post such national/regional calendars as have been decided. We can't avoid scheduling opposite these events, but we can balance the type of tournament we offer locally with what is offered the same weekend on the larger stage.
From the USFA site, the National Calendar:
2009-2010 Dates Location* October 9-12, 2009 (Fri-Mon) Division II/Division III/Cadet Des Moines, IA
November 6-9, 2009 (Fri-Mon) Junior/Cadet/Youth 14 Kansas City, MO
December 4-6, 2009 (Fri-Sun) Division I/Veteran Pittsburgh, PA
January 15-18, 2010 (Fri-Mon) Division I/Junior San Jose, CA
February 12-15, 2010 (Fri-Mon) Junior Olympic Championships Memphis, TN
March 26-29, 2010 (Fri-Mon) Division II/Division III/ Veteran/Wheelchair Dallas, TX
April 23-26, 2010 (Fri-Mon) Division I/Youth 14/12/10 Virginia Beach, VA
July 4 - 13, 2010 Summer National Championships Atlanta, GA

I also got this in response to a query as to the RYC schedule for our region...
John,
Here is what Margaret gave us as a TENTATIVE schedule for the PROPOSED SWS RYC's:
September 5-7, Gulf Coast, SUPER Youth Circuit (Louise)
October 17-18, South Texas, Austin (Eric)
November 14-15, North Texas, Wang Memorial, Fort Worth (Cutting Edge and FIT)
January 30-31, Border Texas (Margaret)
March 27-28, Gulf Coast (Mauro)
I think Louise wants another in Gulf Coast, and we want a second in the spring for North Texas (Aly).

Just an idle observation, but look at the dates. It looks like a bit of a conflict coming up... March 26-29, 2010 (Fri-Mon) Division II/Division III/ Veteran/Wheelchair Dallas, TX and March 27-28, Gulf Coast (Mauro)

IMHO, a RYC (Y14/Y12/Y10) is hardly a conflict against a Div II/III/Veteran/Wheelchair NAC. Only the Y14 kids are able to participate in Div II/III and with few exceptions, they would be competitive.

I know a number of good 14-year old fencers who could fence both and would have to make that decision.

Making decisions and choices is what life is all about.
Meanwhile, any sign of an SSCC calendar?

Just FYI. Looks like October 3 for SWIFA #1 @ A&M. Much appreciated. Could we hear from the SSCC as well? ... information on this coming season's circuit and Sectionals would help us schedule.

I have been advised that the tournament scheduling meeting for Gulf Coast Division clubs will be on Friday, August 14 at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center. I don't have the time yet. In the past it has been about 7PM. I'll post more when I hear it (unless someone with better information posts first).

As promised, a simple calendar of strictly Gulf Coast Division events has been posted on the Rogue Site: Tournament PageI made a point of noting weekend dates with no tournaments currently scheduled so that those who get better organized a bit later can see what is available. I'm sure MTD will have the Division site current this weekend. Presumably our events will also migrate to the section calendar (I have no info on how that works).

Thanks for doing this, John. A few comments about your GCTX Div schedule: a) Season is 2009-10 not "2008-2009 Gulf Coast Division Fencing Season". b) It would be nicer if NACs were marked. c) There are only 3 SSCCs. Is that correct? d) Big tournaments from neighbors (i.e.: Pouj / Bobcat) are not marked. FYI at SN 2008, Oscar left announcements about them: 35th Bobcat Open - Fall 2009 30th Poujardieu Memorial - Late Jan 2010 I know, not exactly very precise, but the Pouj typically is the last weekend of Jan. The STX website lists the SSCC #1 as the Longhorn Open in Austin on Oct. 17-18, 2009 Our SW section webmaster (a.k.a.: " " see your newsletter www.southtexasdivision.org/calendar/09-10/ ) has posted many of the GC division tournaments, but not the SSCC#1. Dear " " . please examine: www.southtexasdivision.org/calendar/09-10/

Thanks for the comments. I will address them. a.) Yes, in updating the body, I neglected to update the heading. I appreciate the catch. I has been corrected. b.) I considered marking NACs... and then ROCs... SYCs.... but there are so many such events now that very soon my "local" Division calendar looks like a National/Regional/Sectional calendar. I include the three SSCCs I know of (Longhorn, Wang & Gulf Coast) because we are required to black out and not hold tournaments opposite those. We are allowed to hold tournaments opposite NACS. For those who want to know about almost every tournament that might pragmatically impact their tournament date choices, I refer them to this calendarc.) My understanding, based on late phone callls during our Friday night meeting is that there are... mebbe 4... with no word from Oklahoma (whom I believe is the 4th division in the section to sign off on holding such an event.) If we get a 4th or 5th SSCC I am already prepared to go into a serious snit. If there is a 4th SSCC, likely it will fall on top of a local tournament the division has granted to some club... and that club will then be forced to cancel. That is just wrong. I think the SSCC needs a deadline (like August 1) to have their act, and schedule, together or give up their right to an exclusive weekend. d.) We did use such dates at our meeting, Adelman, etc... but as you noted, beyond knowing the Pouj is "sometime" in late January there is not much to be done. Again, let me refer those wanting to keep up with everything I can find for the entire section & interesting/significant others to this calendarJEC, I had actually begun posting info from the South Texas calendar onto the forum calendar... but I came across some entries that looked like they might be typos (three tournaments in October and all on the same weekend, the only STX tournament in November being on a Tuesday & Wednesday...) BTW, to all, with regard to the calendar on this forum, may I point out that any registered forum member can post to it... not just me. You go to the month and date in question and click on the "number" part of the date box and it works like posting on one of the boards. Granted, for a 2-day tournament you have to make separate posts on BOTH dates, but that is the joy of copy-&-paste.

Since I was checking the South Texas Calendar for tournament dates to add to the forum calendar, I also visited the North Texas calendar for the same purpose. It may just be me, but I found the calendar dating system a bit confusing.

The STX schedule has been updated to reflect the dates of the 30th Poujardieu Memorial and the 35th Bobcat Open tournaments. The three traditional big tournaments in STX are: Bobcat - Sept. 18-20, 2009 (Friday referee clinic) Longhorn - Oct. 17-18, 2009 (SSCC #1) Pouj - Jan. 23-2, 20104 [/color] www.southtexasdivision.org/calendar/09-10/

So the Poujardieu Memorial is now scheduled on top of the Van Buskirk Memorial?
Cool. Dueling dead coaches.

I don't know which tournament was scheduled (as compared to announced) first, but in both cases, University Gyms are used for other reasons, and the scheduling process began simultaneously. Unfortunately, the outcome appears to be two great tournaments occurring at the same dates.
Perhaps, weapon events should scheduled in alternating dates during that weekend.

It would seem the Gulf Coast Division calendar is not quite a written-in-stone proposition.
After the tournament scheduling meeting, the Bayou City Fencing Academy had its "Division Exclusive Weekend" set October 3-4, 2009.
While that was an "exclusive" weekend for BCFA, with regard to USFA sanctioned events in the Gulf Coast Division, there was a SWIFA tournament scheduled the same Saturday at Texas A&M (which falls within the Gulf Coast Division).
SWIFA, the Southwest Intercollegiate Fencing Association is a a non-USFA group created to foster fencing competitions between colleges in Texas (and presumably, one day, beyond, given its name). They more or less follow USFA rules, but there are differences.
As you can see, this is not really a contradiction, since Gulf Coast Exclusive weekends are purely USFA events. Still, BCFA owner Louise Lepie decided to cancel her protected weekend tournament. It seems SWIFA wanted the services of Davis Jno-Finn and Matt Delevoryas and Louise would have wanted those same services.
Perhaps it was a simply a nice gesture. Perhaps other events in her life had a bearing. Who can say? Perhaps she was still tired from the SYC.
So the BCFA tournament for October 3-4 disappears from the schedule and the only "local" tournament that weekend becomes SWIFA I... which is limited to fencers from the participating colleges and universities.
But wait. We're not done, yet.
The Alliance Fencing Academy, like BCFA, was given a Gulf Coast Divisional Exclusive weekend. In their case, they chose the weekend of September 19-20 (as in, next weekend). It seems, however, that the powers that be at Alliance have noted that Rosh Hashanah begins this year at sundown on Friday, September 18.
The Alliance tournament is scheduled squarely atop the Rosh Hashanah weekend. As of yesterday evening I understand Alliance head coach Andrey Geva has requested that he be allowed to hold his tournament on an alternate weekend...
He would like to have Saturday, October 3rd. (Sound familiar? Scroll back up). Hopefully, all will be resolved soon, but if there is a moral to this little anecdote it is:
A.) Double-check you calendars for conflicts BEFORE you go to a scheduling meeting, and/or
B.) Don't take your eyes off the local tournament calendar or you'll later find that everything you know is wrong.

Sorry, but Rosh Hashanah (if one is Jewish) should be on your calendar. There's really no excuse for that one.
