The proposed changes to the national calendar may be found here, including a pair of charts for ease of comparison. Among the changes this writer noted: 1.)the "Youth NAC" moves from April to June; 2.)no Youth events at the summer Nationals in July; 3.)Y-10 events are removed from SYCs, replaced by Y-14 team events. There is quite a bit more, but those were interesting for starters.

I'm not a parent, but I know a few who might like the idea of a separate Youth NAC/Youth Championships from the huge July event.
Looks like extra emphasis on Y-14, especially teams.

The culmination of the season for cadet and junior fencers has been Junior Olympics since, well, I fenced in Junior Olympics under the AFLA and that was the culmination then. This is not new.

Touche'
You are correct, of course. However, seeing zero national level junior or cadet events from February until sometime around September or October is, shall we say, a departure?
I can only conjecture that this will reduce attendance at qualifiers: no junior qualifiers at Sectionals; no cadet qualifiers at Divisionals.

The culmination of the season for cadet and junior fencers has been Junior Olympics since, well, I fenced in Junior Olympics under the AFLA and that was the culmination then. This is not new. That may be true, but removing the cadets and juniors and Y-* from SN will certainly be a change. I think the huge nature of SN is nice, kind of impressive to see all the different stuff, from V60 down to Y10 or 12. I like it. And I think it's exciting for the kids to go to a big event; a smaller event may be more "serious", but it would be less fun, I think. All those are just feelings, though. How about this for some concrete objections: This would remove some cadets and juniors from team/Div II/Div III stuff, since it's likely they won't come to SN if their primary event is gone. And if you erase a good bit of the calendar, you start to magnify the difference between the 'recreational' kids and the 'elite' kids. 'Elite' kids are still going to train all year long. But under this plan, 'recreational' kids may decide that the fencing calendar is what it is, and they'll play another sport in the 'off season'. We'll lose fencers for that part of the season. K O'N
