A true sign of fall. I'm fencing this weekend, but try to make it every year.

Nicole & I went to TRF on Sunday. Beautiful day. There was, however, one serious disappointment...
The Arte of Defense show is apparantly cancelled. The same venue at TRF was used by another combat act, The Nature of Mercy. We expected it would be another "physical" act. It was very... wordy.
One reason we have become bored with the joust is that we found we had to sit through 40 minutes of chatter for ten minutes (or less) of action.
Alan Hutton's "Oskar Hasselhoff" was sorely missed (Just as we still miss Ann Harlan's "Donna Juanna Corleone"). We saw he was doing his "School of the Sword," which we have enjoyed at Scarborough Renaissance Faire and the Sherwood Renaissance Faire, but that is a one-man show with audience participation.
The Arte of Defense featured three combat routines featuring different weapons and it was clear there was an understanding of the differences in the employment of the weapons used.
I enjoy the Texas Renaissance Festival... I just seem to enjoy it a little less each year. I missing the day-long story arc that spanned the opening at the gates, the end of the noon parade, the human chess match and the dance at dusk that made you feel like you were moving through an environment... not just a bunch of cleverly decorated shops (no insult to the vendors intended).
Each year I seem more and more crushed by the crowds but encounter fewer and fewer performers. I come to entertained, not to attend a "theme mall."
Someone bring back The Arte of Defense... oh, and while we are at it, bring back the human chess match!

I went to TRF this weekend and had a great time. To add to schlager7's post, I also miss the Arte of Defense show. I think the replacement act must have improved since his visit earlier this year, but it does ramble one quite a bit.
I did however enjoy taking "Oskar Hasselhoff's" personal instruction in fencing.
I would add, a visit to Angel Sword is well worth the trip all by itself.

From another thread on this board: Well, it can't be any worse than the Texas Renaissance Festival. TRF has to be the worse festival I've ever visited. Grossly over priced and its like walking into a biker's retreat compared to any sort of RENAISSANCE festival. This year you weren't even in England. You were in some fictitious fantasy land. This was definitely a short cut to educating the cast on the history of the time period. I will not be returning next year. I probably will return next year. However, I completely agree with Gryphon's complaint. While I'm no "history nazi" the fair has wandered widely afield. The number of musical acts seems smaller. The comedic acts have largely gotten stale (would a dramatic/serious performance be completely out of the question?) I can recall when even the vendors made some attempt at "speaking the part." No more. Steampunk? Nothing against them, but at a Renaissance Faire? I can't even attend the joust anymore. The last time I tried I walked out after 20 minutes of talk! I also want Oscar Hasselhoff back in a bigger role. I want Donna Juanna Corleaone back! The fellow who played Peter O'Toole a year ago. (You know, people who obviously had some training in how you wield a sword.)

Just between us, I actually miss the days when the SCA ran rampant through TRF and had their "Battle Mound."
