The Gulf Coast Division's annual tournament meeting will be held at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, 11 August 2010 at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center, 4997 W Bellfort Houston, TX 77035.
This is the meeting held at the beginning of each season to schedule the main part of the season ahead. One of the first actions at these meeting is the allocation of exclusive weekends. Each participating USFA member club will be allocated one exclusive weekend. On that weekend no other USFA fencing club (within this division) may schedule a tournament opposite the club that received the "exclusive." If a fencing club does schedule a tournament on another club's exclusive weekend, it will not receive sanction and may not award changes in letter classifications.
The rest of the meeting is spent with the non-exclusive dates. Many clubs host multiple tournaments over the course of the season. The meeting is to try to minimize conflicts. Whenever possible every effort is made to continue to refrain from scheduling more than one tournament on a given day.
Often one club wants to hold a tournament on a Saturday, but has no plans for Sunday. In that instance the weekend may be divided.
In another case, one club may want to hold only Y-10 & Y-12 events. Another club may use the same day for an open. If a club is holding a tournament of Y-10, Y-12 & Y-14 events, another might use the same date for a veterans' tournament. One club might host an all-epee event, with another club using the day for foil and/or sabre.
Please remember that a club must be a USFA Member Club at the time of the meeting. In the event that a given club's organizers have failed to join by Wednesday, we are advised that USFA Club Membership forms will be available on-site. Rather like a new fencer at a tournament, a club can join at the door on Wednesday.
