I posted a thread at Fencing Net regarding the 2011 NCAA fencing regionals and the National Championship. Results from all the regional action has been posted. The NCAA rules indicate: "Each region will have the ability to accept up to 12 entries per gender per institution, with a maximum of five per weapon" and to qualify for regionals each fencer must have fenced at least 18 bouts against varsity college teams of 4-yr degree granting institutions winning at least 20%. There are 4 regions. Some with many varsity teams (Northeast), others with only few (West). [see: collegefencing360.com/websites.html ] The regionals had very good showing of many fencers from Texas. Tomorrow, the NCAA makes public at 5 pm (EST) the field of 24 fencers for each weapon.
NCAA team championship is based on the highest summation of individual victories. Thus, the more fencers that qualify, the more likely is that a given team is in the running for national champion. There is a maximum of 2 fencers per school per weapon, therefore, 12 fencers is the maximum of potential qualifiers. According to a very good source (dsapery), these are the number of qualified fencers per school:
12: PRIN, OSU, ND
11: HARV, PSU, STJ
9: PENN, COLU
7: STAN
6: DUKE
5: BROWN, NWU, YALE
4: TEMP, USAF
2: BRAN, CORN, SHU, UCSD, UNC, VASS
1: BC, CALT, CLEV, DREW, HUNT, MIT, NYU, UDM, WAYN

The other BIG news is that according to the 2011 NCAA handbook, the NCAA National Fencing tournament will be in San Antonio in March 2012 and 2013.
Future Dates and Sites
2012—Regionals, ; March 10 or 11; Championships Finals, March 22-25, San Antonio Sports Commission and the University of the Incarnate Word, cohosts
2013—Regionals, March 9 or 10; Championships Finals, March 21-24, San Antonio Sports Commission and the University of the Incarnate Word, cohosts
