Katman has graduated (Congratulations, Matt!) and his connections to SWIFA will end. He has asked that I find a new moderator for this board.
Since this is the board where discussions of SWIFA, USACFC, and NCAA fencing is held, I prefer that it be someone who is, in fact, involved. Granted, we have no NCAA fencing, but there are people who are involved with the other two organizations.
As to the duties/powers: A moderator basically keeps the peace and keeps the board organized.
They can delete any post on any thread in their board if they feel it is inappropriate somehow.
They can simply edit and/or delete a small piece of a given post.
They can lock threads on their boards, leaving the posts up to that point available, but making it so the thread goes no further.
For topics they feel are important, they can "sticky:" them, which means they are always at the top of the board, no matter how many other posts come after.
They can delete an entire thread if necessary.
There are a few other details, but I leave those for discussions with the person who thinks they may want the job.
Needless to say, even in slow times you need someone who will check in on the board every day or two.
Additionally, I try, when I can find an appropriate person, to pick as moderator, someone who is involved in that field.
For example, MTD is a certified USFA armorer and is the moderator of that board. DavidSierra is an active and well-rated referee and he moderates that board. The moderator of the Houston Cup board, augustskopik is one of the organizers of that circuit. The moderator of the stage combat board, fightgal, is the fight director of the Texas Renaissance Festival and our regional representative to the Society of American Fight Directors. The moderator of the historical fencing board, Dakao Do, is a member of both Schola St. George and the Tattershall School and has worked with members of the SCA and ARMA members.
Such qualifications are not required, but helpful. Needless to say, there are no unique qualifications for boards devoted to clubs and fencers and tournaments. For those, it is more important to have a level-headed individual who will check by every day or two.
I make it my policy not to second-guess my moderators. If you took an action you thought appropriate, I will stand by you.
So if you are involved in SWIFA and/or USACFC and are interested, send me a PM.
I should add that I am also looking for people to volunteer as moderators for the following boards:
Coaches
Classical Fencing
SCA Fencing
The Joust
Kendo
Iaido
Film/Televison
Literature
UIL/RYC
Since I am trying to diversify the boards, I would probably favor someone who is not already moderating another board over one who is.
