I've noticed that the word "maitre" appears under my avatar. When I look at other forum members I see titles like scribe, moderator, apprentice, prevot.
The moderrator title is obvious, but what is the meaning of the others and who picks what title I get?

Correct.
For example:
0-9 posts = Apprentice
10-24 posts = Contributor
25-49 posts = Scribe
50-74 posts = Moniteur
75-99 posts = Prevot
100-149 posts = Maitre
At this writing, just to pull some examples: Foiledagain is an apprentice. FencerSteph is a contributor. Phincer is a scribe. Cowpaste is a moniteur. Captain Jon is a prevot. Flamberge is a maitre. Dan Gorman is a yeoman.
So far we have no squires or knights. Some folks have posted enough to reach those ranks (LongBlade, Saberbobcat) but because they are also moderators on this forum, that designation supercedes any other title.
Basically, there is a theme link for each consecutive group of three ratings. The first three relate to writing. The next three are 19th/20th Century fencing instructor rankings. Later there are title based on positions in Medieval Society, etc...
They have no real purpose beyond the fun of watching them change as people post more.
Oh, and just in case anyone is curious, not counting yours truly, the top poster at this date is LongBlade with 641 posts, followed by Saberbobcat - 232 Dan Gorman - 191 fox - 142 MTD - 135 Katman - 130 Ivanhoe - 117 Flamberge - 100 and Captain Jon with 90.

1. Can I claim back some of the guest postings? 2. There are no Fencing Experts or Armourers?

Longblade, the short answer is "No, you will never be a knight." You have, at this writing 645 posts. A person gets to be a knight upon their 300th post and you passed that about 345 posts ago. At 400 they become an Armorer (There's JEC's answer). Your current equivalent is something like Masked Avenger (500), but closing in on Sword Master (at 750). Just to finish out the series, at 900 you become "One with the Blade" and with 1000 posts you become a "God of War" (just in case some of the other titles didn't have enough testosterone in them.) ;D Sorry, JEC, guest posts don't count. It just shows another "benefit" of logging in when you visit. Oh, and to LongBlade, thanks for posting on "Salute & En Garde." JEC, I guess it's your turn if you're not too tired from the Bobcat.

OK... With this, my 1,000th post on this forum, I should be a "God of War"! Instead, I'm doomed forever to be a Moderator.
I guess I just really need a life!!![/i]

Well, there may be a way. I'll have to look it uo but I think there is a code I can insert that will keep both the moderator title and your title based on number of posts.
By the time I find it, modify it and incorporate it, it will likely be near the weekend for the Pouj.
For the time being, presume anyone whose green "post meter" goes all the way from left to right and no "X number of posts to next level" has reached God of War status.
However, the member with the highest number of posts minus you and I is saberbobcat with 274 at this writing, so I do not see the population on Olympus (or Asgard or whatever) experiencing any further growth for awhile...

Sabrebobcat I wanted to be the Goddess of War. shoot! looks like you're gonna beat me to it. I also noticed that Dan Gorman is a yeoman? So after all those postings he's of a lower status than gentleman? Just rural middle class? Maybe it's pertaining to the specific branches of the royal household?? hmmm.

Many people do not sign in or did not before they had an account, thus reducing the number of posts they are credited with. Others of us are just very talkative.
