So I leave town last Thursday for Collegiate Club Nationals (Aggies placed 11th -- gig 'em and all that). Tuesday I show up at the club and hear how Olexsiy Ivanov has switched to BCFA along with a handful of saberists and (possibly?) epeeists. What happened? Isn't Olexsiy a saber coach, if so why would any epeeists go with him? That's Andrey's forte. Will Andrey be bringing in a new saber coach for whoever is left, or is he going to just focus on epee and foil? Is he going to be at the Battle on the Bayou so I can bug him directly for the answers? I'm feeling a little like Rip Van Winkle here. Dan

As far as I know all this happened in the last two days (as far as news being released and all that goes). Before that, I was all busy finding out about the Longhorn not being the SoTX SSCC event for next season.

That's pretty sudden. I'd have thought something like this would shake out over a few months at least.

Well, it would be extremely easy for things to build up in the GC division without me hearing about it, and who is to say they've finished shaking out yet?

Yes, I've seen him referee some fairly high level foil - and he's very good at that too. Then again, he's also got a fairly high level referee ranking in all three weapons.

Actually, I finally tracked down the FIE rankings. He has a B in Sabre, but no listed ranking in Foil or Epee, and no record of a USFA ranking at all. That said, I don't doubt his competence in any weapon. I suppose he just needs to take the (horribly ambigious) test some time, perhaps.

Dear kd5mk,
I think that there may be problems with data in the FIE site, because he pulled out his FIE card at the NCAAs with an "A" on it. I know that the USFA site has many problems, my wife was not listed as a person that could vote in the USFA elections along with about 20+ more even though she paid, sent in the paperwork and received a valid card last August. He was not bragging about the card or rating, it was just something he had earned. That is the same way I am about the ratings of 3 in foil/epee I had before the knees. I just earned them, no big deal. If I was put in a position to earn the ratings again, I would.
Don't let the anomynous posts influence your decisions on either Andrey or Alex. They are both fine coaches that I enjoy working around.

This makes no sense. It was stated that if he hadn't left he'd have been kicked out, so how could it be about the money? This is the same kind of thing that was passed around when Tomaz and Spencer-El left their clubs.
So if he coaches all 3 weapons, are any of the foilists going with him also? Who's still at Alliance?

I can't speak to the accuracy of anything, I just see what the websites say. www.fie.ch/Fencing/Refereeing.aspxInnaccuracies there would not surprise me, though.

I belive also that FIE refereeing ratings expire fairly quickly, and I don't think that Oleksii has refereed at an international level much lately.

They must decay very fast, in so much as Sharon Everson described herself as a B at Reno, but is not listed on the FIE list I'm looking at.

As for the FIE site, I'd imagine they're no more web-savy than the USFA. I'd imagine their information is probably out-of-date.
As for this thread, anyone able to answer my questions?

I understood from multiple sources that Alex directed the top bouts at the last Olympics, but I did not see him do it. I am just going by what some of the top NCAA coaches were telling me. I don't know if it was men's or women's events, and never sought an answer.

To answer the question....
I don't know if any epeeists are leaving with Oleksii but he coached my daughter some in epee and he seems very capable. She enjoyed him and my 4 year old thinks his magic tricks are the best LOL. We haven't been to the club since the Monday e-mail that Oleksii was leaving so I have no idea how it has shaken out. Her main coach is Andrey and the two coaches have very different styles so they each helped her move forward. Also, I believe Oleksii is a lefty so that helped her too.
As for how long you were out.....well, I have no idea LOL.
I chase my two other children the entire time K is fencing so I am not up on any politics LOL. We received another e-mail, from Andrey, there will be a new Russian coach, starting next week.
Hope this was helpful. Stacia

So if Andrey has a coach coming in as soon as next week, then this must have been coming to a head for a while. Seems a move within the city might be quick, I'd imagine relocating to a new one takes a little more time.

I'm sure the new coach will be busy giving epee and foil lessons compared to actually giving saber lessons.
Scuttle Butt tells me the new guy was a student of Tischler.
That means in reality, old style (out of date Saber lesson) Tischler hasn't been active since the 70's or rather since they took out the cross over in saber.
More of a reality is the new guy will be more centered on EPEE and Foil. The real reason he's coming to the club.
