I believe that is the plan.
The banquet was largely scrapped because the arrangements called for us to guarantee (i.e. pay for) a certain number of dinners. Over the last 2-3 years attendance at the banquet has dwindled and the result was a net loss we could not ignore.
As to the grand prize, that was always Nicole's creation, something she began working toward months in advance. She was the club president and, since running the tournaments is the president's job, she really applied herself.
With the exception of some partial compensation last year, we had always funded the grand prize ourselves from our personal funds.
This year her father passed away in May and she has spent the time since handling the usual duties that go with being executrix. It left little time to work on spare projects and, as she had taken time off from holding club office, she did not feel the duty of office to push herself further.
One day, if we ever get to a time that fencers don't just evaporate as soon as their event is over (or they are knocked out of the race) there may be a place for a slower-paced, more relaxed, all-day and evening combination of tournament and night out.
It would seem that day is not here, yet.

I obviously am missing something. I've never been to Fete de Lune so this 3-weapon trophy/grand prize eludes me. (Although I confess to some significant curiosity now ). As to the banquet, good luck. Fencers like to complain that they can't get an audience, that no one watches fencing. Yet how many fencers stay to watch the gold medal DE once they have been knocked out? How many fencers stay to watch the other events once theirs is over? Stay past their last bout for a banquet? Be amazed if they stay one bout past their own.

Many of the fencers hang out together following the event to socialize with their friends. Veteran's tornaments are a different kind of animal.

If any fencers have not seen the Fete 3-weapon trophies, they are on display in the window at my facility and poeple stop and look at them all the time. Great work Nicole and John.
I understand about the economics of it, and it is just something we have to live with in the sport. I have not figured out how to get free space and electricity and have someone donate for my time yet.

Ah, yes. For myself, I believe, however enjoyable, it is not about the bout. It is the meal, the wine, the conversation...the celebratory acts of peerage.

What Geezer is trying to say is that us old farts have a good time at the tourney... win, loose, or draw... and have another with our friends after the tourney. (Although I personally want the taste of warm, fresh, bleeding throat in my mouth after every bout!)
We're veterans. We're different than you. Get over it! ;D

Yeah I will admit that it is usually us young people that leave after we lose our bouts.. 1) we all have ADD and get bored easily, 2) we have hot dates and need to go home to shower, and 3) we're probably hungry or need a drink.

Yes, it was good. I was on the receiving end of some very nice fencing too. My compliments to ALL! For those who did not dine with us afterward, we would have enjoyed your company. Next time , I hope. Cheers

I want to thank all the fencers came out to fence and the referees who gave up their Saturday to work for us.
I'd like to especially single out kb, who trekked from the opposite side of the Metro area to run the tournament and would accept no pay.
And don't think Nicole and I didn't try to get pushy about having her take some money from us!
Next time we meet closer to your side of town the beer's on us!

Thanks, kb. I also want to point out that John Bone came to the rescue as we did not have a 3-weapon trophy. He offered a beautiful color-glass leaded window frame of two Epees crossing. Ray Sexton won it!

The Bone Family really came through for us, and we appreciate all they did. You can see a photo of Ray and his prize, receiving the applause of his peers, as well, on the main page of the "rogue" Gulf Coast website. I also posted to the same page, the foil gold medal DE between Curtis Hardy and Ray Sexton on the top of that page. At the bottom of the main page is the epee gold medal DE between Ray and Don Cravey (In two parts as it went to two encounters.)

I owe him a thousand times more. (Such a patient guy with the web illiterati) Oh yes, we will have that beer(s)! And we're so glad Ray liked his house bling.
