Hi all:
Just wanted to toss out that Nicole and I are off to the RenFest today. First day!
Woo-Hoo!

Well, we got back alive. Actually, we went to RenFest on Saturday, then drove to Dallas Saturday night for the Sabre Cave competitions.
We only got a glance at this year's acts. My wonderful wife did, however, buy me a brand new ensemble, consisting of doublet, breeches and slops at Pendragon.
We saw part of the third Joust of the day. The joust is put on by the Hanlon-Lees Action Theatre.
I was disappointed. Granted, even in recent years past, the jousts at TRF were never that riveting.
A number of the knights who were supposed to be unhorsed by the blow of their adversairies lance, had to pause to lift their leg over the horse's neck so that they could "fall" to one side.
Hopefully it will improve by our next visit. We hope to catch Throw Up and To The Hilt, next time.

Just who does run the jousts at the Renaissance Festival? Do they do it themselves. Is it a group from Houston?

Don't know anything about the jousts, I've stopped going to those. Throw Up and To the Hilt continue to amuse me though. I enjoyed wandering around checking out all the costumes there. Didn't see anyone I know this year though.

I'll have a costume on my next visit.
As to Sabre Cave, I did not participate (due to lack of electric sabre gear... though I may invest next year... pricey start, but seems to go down less often than foil or epee).
For my wife ("Maupin" on this board) it was her first electric sabre tournament (well once about 10 years ago, hardly counts). She fenced women's sabre. We did not stay for mixed or we'd never have made it back to Galveston County.
She was one of 13 sabreuses. After an initial hesitancy in the pools seeded 10th. She won her first DE 15-13 and lost her second DE 15-11 to the woman who ultimately took the gold. Not a bad first outing.
The mixed looked pretty large. I saw Ray Sexton and Diane Kallus there. The results should be on Ask Fred.

Is the SCA still doing their foil-rapier-whatever bouts in that little alcove by the heraldry place?

I heard SCA got booted. There was a different group where they used to be. I don't know any details though.

I was at TRF 2 Saturdays in a row, after finally tracking down Byron at "The Pirate's Treasure" to get the court sword he reserved for me.
(Let me stop here to say that I love this sword. It has replaced my Glock 19 as my favorite weapon. I had to have a talk with 'Glockie' and explain that it wasn't it, it was me, and that things change. Though I've had great times with that gun, sometimes a man and his weapon just grow apart, its no one's fault. Who knew a slender blade would catch my eye and sweep me off my feet! The sword and I have been spending a lot of time together since we first met this weekend.
I told the Glock we should just be friends and that I'd always be there for it if it needs me. I'll never forget the good times we had: the ringing in my ears, its hot barrel in my hand. I remember that time the hot brass ejected, bounced off the firing range wall, and went down my shirt collar and burned me. I laughed, the Glock smoked. We really understood each other... I can only hope that time will heal the wounds. As Sting's song goes, "when you love someone, set them free."
But I digress. (back to TRF...) I only stopped to take in the falconry show, since most of the other acts are telling the same jokes they were doing 6 years ago when I first went. It seemed so much more enthralling then, though I am older and less easily impressed now. Maybe it seemed so much better in the old days because I was usually intoxicated. Alcohol makes everything more amusing for me, I suppose. I have to go now, its time to oil the sword again (and I mean that in the most non-innuendo-esque way...)

I don't wanna get you piste-off Piste Off, but that whole monologue was pretty scary...

Hiya, I stumbled across this because I have a stage combat group online and was invited to take a look here. I happen to be the fight director at TRF, so here's the scoop. The SCA is no longer in the compound, it is now the Valentine Academy of Arms and Armor, complete with a very nice museum of armor upstairs. Our "Art of Defense" tournament show is now performed in the arena 4x a day. Rob Valentine plans on filling the rest of the time with a presentation of his own in the future. Anyone interested in joining the TRF cast should call the office and make an audition appointment. We have staged combat auditions after initial casting is completed. Thanks, hope that helps. ~Ann
