Found on a related group:
Hello My Name Is Jeffery Johnson and I have been doing Asian, and African martial arts based stage combat since the mid 90's in Austin, TX.
I belong to a group called Foundation Stage Combat, and we are ready to take our art to the next Level. We were hoping someone could give us some info on how to get into the business network of the industry.
We are really looking for some sound advice. we are getting a site up soon with footage from some of the theatre and film projects that we've worked on...
We're also wondering if it's nessessary to join or be affiliated with an established combat group? If the answer is yes, then what steps do we need to take- Classes, schools etc? And how long does it take to become certified to teach or be considered a professional?
We have years of martial arts experience in the styles of capoeira, kali, thai boxing, silat, (zulu stick/spear/and shield fighting) kendo, kung fu, jeet kune do, and we are constently gainning knowledge in other indiginous fighting arts. we are currently researching the fighting arts of New Zealand and Northern Africa.
I've been in love with the martial arts since the age of 7, and I have been peforming and choreographing fight scenes since the age of 14! I am almost 27 years old now, and we don't want to spin our wheels if I don't have to.
So if anyone has any info to share, workshops, meetings, competitions, showcases, anything please let us know.
Thank You ,
Jeff Johnson of Foundation Stage Combat

The Society of American Fight Directors is the most widely recognized organization in the U.S. for standards of stage combat, and is the organization that the Actors Equity Association has turned to for work standards in their contracts and agreements. Training in the S.A.F.D. can lead to Certified Teacher status and beyond. Check out the training information at www.safd.org. You may also contact me, the Southwest Regional Rep for the S.A.F.D. at SWRegRep@safd.org. I hope this helps. ~Ann
