If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, I am flattered, indeed. A new high school fencing club has formed in my area. Indeed, it is an off-shoot/spin-off from my home club (CLear Lake Fencing Club). Sneaky kids, they never told me a thing, I stumbled on their "Underground" website ( www.geocities.com/fencing_is_the_best/home.html ) all on my own. They even have their own forums which are (VERY) similar to these. ccmw2.proboards7.com/ . The reading was a fascinating glimpse at the issues and roadblocks faced by a new high school fencing club and what the kids are willing to do to solve these problems. Good luck, guys!

Ya know, I was reading the high school board... usual stuff.
The I got to the posts that talked about the fact that they are not allowed to FENCE ON CAMPUS. What's the point of that? (No pun inteneded).

They have to start somewhere. Maybe their moron school board will one day realize fencing is probably safer than most other sports they're sponsoring... /shrug --PisteOff

I'm sorry, but
no coach
no fencing on campus
just a buncha high schoolers running around trying to get it together on their own.
It's sad
and about what I'd expect. What are they going to do when they go into Houston and meet some real fencers?

If they have a parent that cares enough to invest in a private strip, I'd give them more credit than this. Maybe meeting "real fencers" will inspire them to search for a real coach. After getting getting completely stomped, they will realize that it is impossible to do it on their own. Too bad one of you guys up there can't lend a helping hand. Sounds like they could use it.

The Clear Lake High School bunch doesn't have much, but if you're worried about them...send a cash donation. They're trying to buy insurance and bribe adult supervision. However, about half of them started at the Clear Lake Fencing Club and still go there, so they do get strip time. And, some belong to "Trade of Blades", a club of young fencers coached by Scott Brown. They both get my support, and $$, (from my kid's involvement and interest), so things could be better, but they could be alot worse.

:-*This one's for you Geezer! Keep helping them, because it is worth the effort! I'd send your new club cash, but I'm broke from supporting my own fledglings in Corpus Christi. However, you have my undying moral support for what it is worth.

It sounds to me like Clear Lake Fencing Club and Scott Brown deserve a pat on the back, too!

Well, for awhile, the Clear Lake and Cy-Falls High School fencing clubs were the new kids on the block (the high school fencing block, that is). But now... After reading this thread on Fencing Net www.fencing101.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9553it looks like yet [glow=red,2,300]another[/glow] high school club may appear in our division. I hope some of local club leaders can offer her some help and/or advice. How many clubs can this division hold?

:)The Westchester Fencing Club rocks! I don't have to leave my school campus to fence for 3 days out of the week. My history teacher buys stuff for us, fixes our blades when they're not working properly, gives us good pointers (he's especially good with the younger elem/middle school age), one-on-one foot/blade work time, and has put a lot of energy into raising more money so we can have score machines. Stephen Moss and everyone else at WAIS fencing is awesome! We're not just "kids" getting together and trying to do stuff on our own. I also fence at Katy Blades and Bayou City. Brian Sharples and I (along with other members as well) participate in a lot of local tournaments and do very well. Brian even made it to the Junior Olympics and last summer I went to the Summer Nationals in Austin! In fact, just the other day Leslie Marx was at our school fencing with us.. you know the Assistant Coach from Duke University! >:(So don't even say that high school fencing is a waste of time and that it's "sad" because we're doing a lot to promote fencing in the Houston area, and on top of that we're getting the next generation interested in fencing. I believe we deserve a round of applause! If you were smart you would help those high school clubs get their feet off the ground, because that's were your champions will be coming from.

Pru is correct, they have a great club at Westchester. Leslie Marx was an Olympian, and part of the only husband/wife team to compete at the same Olympics together, (I take this info from USFA press releases). If you are concerned with High School and school aged fencing, check out the Katy Area School Championships April 24th on www.askfred.net. I have extended the late registration until next week. It looks like about 60 different participants of school age will be competing in the Houston area. I really was putting together an event for the people in my club and Westchester, and it has mushroomed. Katy Blades Fencing Academy Announces The Katy Area School 2004 Fencing Championships April 24th, 2004 Morton Ranch Junior High Events: Epee Youth 1st – 3rd Grade Epee 11:00 am Youth 4th – 5th Grade Epee 11:00 am Youth 6th – 7th Grade Epee 12:00 pm High School Men’s Epee 2:00 pm High School Women’s Epee 2:00 pm Foil High School Women’s 11 am High School Men’s 11 am Youth 1st – 3rd Grade 1:30 pm Youth 4th – 5th Grade 1:30 pm Youth 6th – 7th Grade 2:00 pm Sabre Youth 6th – 7th Grade 11:00 am High School Men’s 12:00 pm High School Women’s 12:00 pm Youth 1st – 3rd Grade 3:00 pm Youth 4th – 5th Grade 3:00 pm Location: Morton Ranch Junior High Gymnasium 2498 North Mason Road Katy, Texas 77449. Hi all, I just wanted to say hi and maybe start up some more discussion of high school fencing. It seems that fencing is on the rise at the school level. I'm working to start a club up at another spring-branch school, as well as buliding up the Westchester program. But only time will tell how this program will turn out. I'm also looking outside Spring-branch and hoping to get something going in Katy the schools soon. It seems that their is a want among students to try it out. So I'm hoping more people will support the efforts of these kids. I'm really happy to see that the students at Clear Lake have banded together despite the apparent lack of support from the school principal. Keep it up guys! As far as W.A.I.S fencing is concerned, it looks like we will be fencing five days a week next year, and hopfully adding more club equipment and building up a stronger foil program. Also I want to thank all the fencers in the Gulf Coast div. for the support that you have given me. This year W.A.I.S. students went to 27 tournmants and won lots of medals! It was a real success! see you all next tournament season! ---Stephen Moss Westchester Fencing Club
