The Coastal Bend Fencing Society finished 2004 with a bang! All the hard work Grace and Megan Haberzettle have done to obtain coaching and refereeing certification has paid off.
Aug. 28, coach Grace Haberzettle took home three top medals from the Fete de Lune held annually by Clear Lake Fencing Club in Houston at NASA.
Grace took 1st place in women's Sabre, 1st place in women's Foil, and 2nd place in women's Epee.
CBFS member Robin Adkins of Corpus Christi took 5th place in women's Foil, while CBFS member Tim Kellogg of Corpus Christi took 5th in mixed Sabre, 22nd in mixed Foil, and 25th in Mixed Epee.
In October, Grace and her daughter Megan both participated in a sabre coaching clinic held by Palo Alto College in San Antonio, which is an Olympic Training Center in Texas.
Both ladies passed their practicum, and Grace took her written exam, which is being graded by the United States Fencing Coaches Association.
She awaits results, which should grant her a Moniteur Coaching Certification in saber.
On Oct. 24, the ladies traveled to the Longhorn Open at the University of Texas, one of the largest tournaments of the year in Texas, and Megan took 9th out of 29 in women's Sabre.
This was a great showing since 14-year-old Megan was by far the youngest fencer competing in Women's Sabre.
Nov. 24, both Grace and Megan attended a referee seminar in Houston where they helped referee for the Regional Youth Circuit tournament which was held at the Houston Fencing Athletic Center.
As a result, Megan is now a certified saber referee and Grace is a certified referee in saber, epee, and foil.
At this same tournament, Megan took 3rd place in Y 14 womens Sabre.
The last tournament of the year was the South Texas Junior Olympic Qualifier, was the icing on the cake for CBFS members.
At this tournament, CBFS member Zach Wilson fenced extremely well.
Wilson, a T-M sophomore took 2nd place in Junior (20 and under) men's Sabre and 3rd place in Cadet (17 and under) men's Sabre which qualified him to compete in both divisions in the 2005 Junior Olympics.
CBFS member Megan Haberzettle (T-M 8th grader) fenced exceptionally well, too, and won 1st in Cadet (17 and under) women's Sabre, 2nd in Cadet (17 and under) Epee, and 2nd in Cadet (17 and under) Foil.
This qualifies her to compete in all three weapons at the Cadet level at the Junior Olympics this year.
Krista Stidham, CBFS Junior Olympic team member was unable to compete in the qualifiers this year, so she will attend the Junior Olympics in Arlington as an assistant coach with head coach Grace Haberzettle.
The Junior Olympics will be held Feb. 18-21 in Arlington.
The Coastal Bend Fencing Society is currently holding fund-raisers to cover tournament expenses.
