USAF Academy, Colo. - The Air Force Academy men and women's fencing team competed in Albuquerque, N.M., at the New Mexico Open, Sept. 15-16. The Falcons opened the 2007-08 season with several top performances coming from both the team's older and younger athletes. Seven top-three positions were won, while three fencers earned new U.S. Fencing Association ratings.
Sophomore Peter French (Austin, Texas) won the senior mixed epee competition and freshman Daniel Trapani (Houston, Texas) was the runner-up. Senior Adam Schenk took sixth place followed by freshman Curtis Christensen (Los Alamos, N.M.) and So. Brennan Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Christensen finished 13th. Jones finished 16th and moved up in the U.S. Fencing Association (USFA) ratings, earning an "E" rating. Among the 64 competitors, AFA's senior Eliza Enyart (Bend, Ore.) finished 29th in the tournament, while So. Jennifer Nolta placed 49th.
In his first collegiate tournament, freshman Nick Stockdale, Lansdowne, Pa., moved up in the USFA ratings from a "B" to an "A" after wining the senior mixed foil competition. Fr. Daniel Fang, a native of Duluth, Ga., took sixth place in the competition. Junior Ainsley Allen placed 34th mixed foil and Sr. Collette Bannister finished second in women's foil.
There were 25 competitors in the senior mixed saber tournament. Among those were AFA's sophomores Michael O'Connor, Alexander Brand and Sr. Brent Watson. O'Connor tied third in the event. He was followed by Brand (Needham, Mass.) and Watson who both finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Anthony Lorenzini, Brent Lavey and Angelica Plazas finished 15th, 17th and 22nd, respectively.
"I am very proud of our freshmen," said Head coach Abdel Salem. "Our newcomers handled themselves very well at this first Open. Our juniors and seniors also had a good weekend. It will be interesting to see how they all handle themselves in the first NAC of the year in October."
In the 20-competitor senior women's epee tournament, AFA's senior Enyart took second place. Mary Guzowski, a junior from Tiffin, Ohio, moved up in the USFA ratings after finishing seventh. She earned her "E" rating. Nolta also competed in the event, she finished 11th.
Finally, with only two AFA competitors in the 11-person senior women's foil event, Bannister took second place and Allen took ninth place. Plazas tied third of six in the women's saber event.
With one successful tournament under their belts, the AFA fencers will travel to Tucson, Ariz., on October 5-8 for the first North American Cup Divisions II/III.
