When this site began having problems with spammers (Thanks for the heads up on them, Longblade!), I began using some services to identify the location to see if blocking was feasible.
Since spammers may have mulitple IPs provided by an ISP, I figued I would have to take out everything from some ISPs. WHile this is fine for dealing with types operating out of New Dehli (as the ones hitting this site were), it would have been a tougher game if they were local.
The various IP trackers/locators etc services have been well worth the time. They also have served to illuminate somethings about who goes to the three sites I run.
The rogue Gulf Coast Division sites gets anywhere from 20 (on tournament days) to about 100 (when notices of updates go out) hits per day. 80 % are from Houston, College Station and other cities in the division. Most of the rest come from other visions in our section. The cities displayed are, most frequently Austin, Dallas, San Marcos, Shreveport, Tulsa New Orleans... you get the idea.
The same can be said of this discussion forum, except that it comes to about 65% from this division, 25% from the nearby divisions and the remaining 10% from Illinois, New Jersey, Missouri, Washington (state), Florida and New York... pretty much in that order.
You may or may not be surprised that some of the more inflammatory trolls, the really short, nasty pieces, come from that far afield.
The only other oddity is that my Division history site is access 50% from Texas and 50% from everywhere else... England, Argentine, Egypt, Greece, China and Germany most often.
