I was wondering if someone could tell me how y'alls Circuit Cup is organized.
I am supposed to be chairing the committee that is revamping our division's Cup and was wondering what you guys do down there. I know there's a difference between Section and Division events.
Are there any Division Cups in y'alls section?
Events? Criteria? Any bonuses for out of Section events?

You can take a look at the ops manual for the SSCC: Go to www.southwestfencing.org/SSCC/ At the top right, you should see "Operations Manual." Click "Go." The Ark-La-Miss Division tried unsuccessfully to keep a division cup going. There was lots of enthusiasm at the annual meeting, but as the new season rolled around the interest dwindled. The Gulf Coast has something similar to a division cup - you can read about it on this forum: campechesteel.proboards15.com/index.cgi?board=CupSo you don't have to go through the whole thing, seeding for the SSCC events this year went like this: Senior national points, Top 32 SSCC points, Letter rating/year. So, in a way, you get a bonus for doing well nationally. But that's it. You don't literally get points for out-of-Section events.

I'm not familiar with any particularly successful Division Circuits, offhand. The Bay Cup appears to have been competitively successful, but it covered 3 Divisions and was located in a very dense area, both of general population, clubs and fencers. I don't know how successful the Houston Cup is.
I think that to have a successful Circuit, you need: 1) To be located in an area (of whatever size your circuit is) able to have quality competitions entirely within it, without too much out of area travel. People want to attend quality tournaments, and if they are not available locally, they will leave your Circuit area for them.
2) Enough tournaments that not all are counted in the Circuit. It seems to me to be a rule of fencing that there are some people/places that just want to hold rinky dink little tournaments no matter where they are, and that's ok. But if places which don't test body cords, or go all self-directed, or don't have a Bout Committee to appeal to are included in your circuit, you'll find fencers going elsewhere and not caring. So it's important to have enough tournaments that the less serious ones don't have to be included.
Finally, as far as the SSCC goes, the seeding was: 1) Senior National Points, then rating, then Top 32 SSCC points, then rating year. Only SSCC events awarded points, and it worked out to that they only reorder fencers within letters.
I agree that reading the SSCC Ops Manual provides a good indication of how tournaments should go.

kd5mdk, you made a VERY good point about needing to have enough tournaments that they aren't all cup tournaments. We've found in South Texas recently that the one event tourneys (like Cleave & Leave and I Hit You First, Damnit) are quite popular and don't require a lot out of the facilities. But I certainly wouldn't consider them an option for a cup (who would?).
And don't forget that we went to a rolling points system for the SSCC this year.

Oh, I don't know... there have been thoughts of a "Texas Sabre Cup" tossed around before - the one day sabre tournaments would be a good place to start!

I like the sound of that. Think a TX Sabre Cup might do good things for WS? So many women seem to like circuit competition... I'm pretty sure I'd be at as many as I could manage!

What would make it different from the SSCC Sabre standings?

It would be a bit more low key, and involve tournaments that would never become SSCC events (like SabreCave or the one day sabre events in San Marcos).
