Bayou City is purported to have an excellent saber coach... Schlager can elaborate no doubt...

BCFA has a full-time sabre coach, I coach sabre at A&M and part-time at Salle Mauro, and Salle Mauro will be getting a full-time sabre coach at the beginning of the new year (although he's going to visit in November if anyone is interested in meeting him then). As far as I know that sums up the coaches in the division who focus on sabre.

Go ahead and call me on that will you? Mauro told me his name, but I don't remember. He used to coach in Kansas City though and he was recommended by Vladimir Nazlymov. If I remeber I'll post it.

I very much desire to attend coaching school for sabre since it is my favorite weapon... Does anyone know when the next school will be offered? I heard that one might be offered in the near future in San Antonio. -Grace Haberzettle (Corpus Christi's Coastal Bend Fencing Society)

I haven't seen anything about it posted yet, but then I haven't been looking to hard either. I sent Vinnie Bradford an e-mail about it and will post back her response.
In the meantime, you might as well start coming to some of the local tournaments and seeing what's going on. The Heavy Metal is Nov 8-9 at Texas A&M.

I'm going to try to make it. It would be nice to fence team sabre. However, that is the weekend of my daughter's birthday party... So, we will see what pans out. Thanks for the personal invitation.

To my knowledge, right now Salle Mauro, Bayou City and Alliance Fencing all cover sabre.
I am unsure of Texas A&M's status since their primary coach, Dan Gorman, has been activated and is in Iraq.
Someone from A&M will have to answer for them.

Bayou City HAD a 'saber coach'. He is very good fencer but very poor coach. He is not teaching many classes there any more. He will be gone soon. The best guy who is doing any saber coaching is Geva at Alliance Fencing Academy(check out his website). Although he is a very accomplished epee coach, he is solid in saber too. He has the only good competetive regualr saber fencers in the Houston area(current SW Section point leader and another in the top 10-plus a new B probably coming soon). Geva has another coach for epee and foil, and has a great deal for his students with the Post Oak YMCA. His students get fencing plus conditioning having access to all the YMCA facilities. He also has classes out of the Woodlands and Tomball.

I just thought I'd let you guys know that Coastal Bend Fencing Society has a really cool sabre coach now that comes on Monday nights from 7:30-9:00 p.m. He is originally from Taiwain, and his name is Lei Pan. Personally, I am really impressed with the work he has done with Megan in the last couple of weeks. So, if you are serious about sabre and are in the Corpus area on a Monday night, you might come check him out. Oh, and Paul Schimelman from The University of Texas in Austin is outstanding, too. We plan to visit him during our intersession. This will be a bit of a drive, but well worth it!

did Lei Pan ever fence at Rice? I'm pretty sure I remember him, although I thought his name was Tan, but then I never was that good at head parries so my memory may have been affected.

Yes, Lei did fence at Rice. He moved to the Corpus area, so now we have him. Will Bearden fences with us as well (A& M alumni saberist) and Jason Gultijaeff (Australian epeeist that used to fence in the Houston area). Slowly, but surely, we are growing and drawing in some excellent fencers.

Your head parried were better than mine! Lei's last name _is_ Tan! Megan was not there tonight to get her lesson, so I took her place. Oh, my! He is a fine sabre coach.

Tell Will I said hi.
I should come visit your Salle some time, maybe bring some Salle Mauro people. They're young and in development but eager.

I would love to have a chance to hit the beach and fence in the same day... If possible I'm there!!!!!! BTW I fence Epee.
Try to remember, Sabre is just something for the rest of us to watch while we wait for DE's to be posted.........it's not really part of the tounament, is it?

BCFA did loose their saber coach. Lei should know that there is a good group of saber folks fencing at Alliance with Andre Geva. There is also a weekly get together for saber fencers that has been organized. The first three were fabulous. If he or anyone is interested let me know I will forward the schedule. Our so called 'saber night in texas', rotates between three clubs. Last Friday we met at Katy. Katy Blades did an excellent job of hosting, they were great! We have a good group usually ranging from 8 to 10 in number, B's to unrated.

Rumor has it that BCFA is about to test out a new sabre coach (or maybe he is testing out BCFA). Akhnaten Spencer-El is his name and he is out of the Peter Westbrook group. It sounds like he will be in Houston sometime during the week of June 7-10.

;D CBFS has been blessed with another coach (sabre, epee & foil). Years ago, Bob Jones was the assistant fencing coach at Temple University and was scheduled to be the epee alternate the year the U.S. boycotted the Olympics. Also, sabre coach Witold Rak out of Queens, New York (Woodside Fencing Center) is scheduled to work with our fencers in October, anyone interested in lessons while he is down needs to contact me at: Saberbobcat@aol.com
