So a former Aggie fencer is trying to get information on Russell Weider. Things like who he trained under, when he coached at A&M, and so forth. I would appreciate any leads people could give on that information, or anything else they think would be useful. I'll forward any information back to him.
Thanks for your time.

Ah, the odd coincidences that fill a researcher's life.
As some of you know, I've been working on a fencing history of our division for awhile now. Information trickles in slowly, but I am past due to update my history site (very rough prose, work-in-progress, you know).
Yesterday evening, my wife and I were passing through College Station so I took the opportunity to ransack their yearbooks.
I get home and open my email to find the same message Dan got. For any with an interest, here are the rough details I gleaned from those:
The yearbooks up through 1952 do NOT list Wieder as coach. Indeed, the 1952 volume indicates a senior student as captain and as faculty sponsor a Lt. Col. Frank Vaden from the Military Department. No actual coach is mentioned. I should also mention that past correspondence between myself and former UH and Rice fencing coach Arnold "Sonny" Mercado, would indicate the A&M students were largely self-coached at this time (late 1940s-early 1950s). I could not find copies of the A&M yearbook for 1953, 1954, 1955, or 1956. He appears in photos in the 1957 volume's single-page layout on the fencing club. There was no 1958 volume on the shelf. Mr. Wieder is in the 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1963 volumes. Fencing either did not appear in the 1962 volume or the volume was absent. Other volumes were missing after this. The chronologically immediate volumes which were on the shelf devoted no pages to fencing.
The next year for which I had a volume present and with space devoted to fencing was 1976. Mr. Wieder was absent by then. (A man named Abe Cyrus is listed as coach that year).

Just FWIW, I see that Tuesday, June 27th is the birthday of the late Russell K. Wieder, one-time fencing coach at Texas A&M.
