This is where my frustration kicks in.
Some folks feel it is too hard to get tournament dates. I submit that the problem is quite the opposite. Plenty of tournament dates were granted and too few actually USED.
Two cases in point:
1.) In two weekends, the Academy of Fencing is scheduled to hold a tournament (7-8 June). There is nothing on FRED. The division calendar for that weekend reads only,
Jun. 7-8 (anticipated open/youth/veteran/wheelchair tournament) Academy of Fencing
The SW Section calendar basically repeats this message.
2.) For the weekend of June 21-22, Young Elites was granted a tournament. Some may recall they also had one slated for a weekend a few months ago. That tournament never materialized. This upcoming tournament no longer even appears on the Division calendar so it seems safe to presume it is defunct.
In theory, another club should be able to take over that date but there is now less than a month before the date in question.

Human nature. Everyone wants all the tournament dates they can get... then use them or not.
Not efficient, but very human... sad to say.

Dear John,
That is exactly the beef I have. I would have two tournaments a month if I was able. I need more D and under, and I want to hold several Vet events. I have about 8 new Vets new to fencing, but I would not want to throw them against Jack. Actually one of my new 1 month fencers fence in my tournament this weekend and scored touches.
I have to wait until the last weekend to schedule because I want events they can attend. I lost about 1/2 my students last weekend, particularly the women.
In some restaurants the people reserve the table and pay a fee if they don't show up. This also happens in the medical community.
What if we just make the dates more available. Let the restricted tournaments announce their weapons and events two months before? Let the other dates be open? We only have so many weekends and if they are not used it is a shame. Gas and airlines, ($100 extra cost for fencing gear), will make travel more expensive so local events will be more important.

Dear John,
You got this email because I copied you, here is the email I sent requesting several venues have the ability to host tournaments.
I need Y10, Y12, Y14, Cadet and Open Epee, and I know that Mauro, Olexeii and Andrey need the same and different weapons. We should share that weekend if possible.
Dear Rachel,
I am requesting the June 21 - 22nd weekend for a USFA epee event, and I would like to leave that weekend available for a saber and foil event. I think that weekend would be a great weekend for a tuneup across the division for different age groups.
Please consider this option and others to help our fencers get ready for the US Summer Nationals.

Augie:
I was thinking along a similar line. One proposal I sent to bounce off the EC even as I was making the earlier post is the following (Granted, I have no way to know if the clubs I mentioned are even interested):
=============================================
To the best of my ability to research this matter, the weekend of 21-22 June, previously assigned for a fencing tournament to hosted by the Young Elites of Houston is now laying fallow. I note that the Tournament Calendar of the Gulf Coast Division does not currently list any local tournaments on that weekend. I have a proposal. The weekend in question is only a week and a half before the summer National Fencing Championships. It represents a last opportunity for Gulf Coast Division fencers to sharpen their skills, as it were. In their interest, I propose two, two-party competitions. One tournament would consist of the two conventional weapons (foil & sabre). I propose, based on fencers and the referee base, that it be jointly hosted by Salle Mauro and the Bayou City Fencing Academy at a facility as would be sufficient for this purpose. The second tournament would consist of epee events. I propose, based on fencers and the referee base, that it be jointly hosted by the Alliance Fencing Academy and the Katy Blades at a facility as would be sufficient for this purpose. It might also be worth considering making each tournament a single-day event and holding them on opposing days of the weekend. I recognize that the protocol once a weekend is vacated is to polls all clubs if they wish to request a now-unclaimed weekend, then decide based on which of the clubs requesting that date have scheduled the fewest events this year. By all means, the protocol should be followed. My thought is that if this proposal should accompany the email to the clubs, most would refrain from trying to claim the weekend in the interest of a particularly strong event at this time of year. Respectfully submitted, John Trojanowski Clear Lake Fencing Club Galveston Fencing Club

The EPEE fencers in GC Division have two choices for June 8th: De Gall in NTX or San Antonio Div. I Epee tournament in STXaskfred.net/Events/moreInfo.php?tournament_id=5987For June 21, there is a Saber tournament in Austin.

I admit I find schlager7's proposal intriguing. It flows with the strengths of the division's largest clubs.

Sweet. That would the epee much closer to my part of town.
The whole plan has a kind of symmetry.
I'll be the first to admit that they have good epee fencers at Salle Mauro, but it and BCFA are much more about foil & saber.
Andrey and Augie are all over epee.
Just a week and half before nationals. Everyone is pumped and jazzed up. Yeah. Oh, yeah.

John's proposal sounds very reasonable to me. I'll run that by Louise and get her say in it.

Too much good karma in one day. I have to stay in Katy Mills Mall because I have to be open. Please don't make it too restrictive such as a one day event only. If Andrey can hold some events and I hold others it would be good.
We will try to cover the crossover's, and make certain to schedule the Y14 or cadet on top of the saber to frustrate Davis.

Augie: I deliberately made the plan vague just so no one would be locked into an unworkable system. You can see my general idea was to generally run with our collective strengths. Besides, if your venue is available, what is to say Andrey & Co could not come to your facility? My main thought was the pooling of talent & skills. Oh, and to frustrate Jett... just block him from fencing in junior women's epee...

Hmm, I'm not sure I approve of this blocking me stuff. Luckily I've prepared for these situations, and I am working on creating a clone of myself. If successful, I will also create a Y-14 female version of myself too!

... I want to hold several Vet events. I have about 8 new Vets new to fencing, but I would not want to throw them against Jack. ... Augie,
I hope your Vet fencers consider participating in the Fete de Luna (GC) and Veteran's Melee (STX) SVCC events next season. If you can devote a day (or part of 1 day) from ONE of your exclusive GCD weekends to a Veteran event, and I can convince LongBlade (Long but rusted) to do a Vet event in San Marcos (benefitting TSU), we could easily have 4 Veteran SVCC events less than 4 hrs away from each other. We have a low per person tax for season's SVCC medals. The 2007-8 Medals will be awarded at the Fete de Luna. It is important to note that Veteran Fencers celebrate with a get together dinner at the end of our Saturday tournaments.
PM or email me if you want to get more details on the SVCC.
The SVCC season for 2008-9 might look like:
1. Aug 23 (?), 2008 - Fete de Luna (CLFC - GC) 2. Fall '08 - LONGBLADE (Memorial?? - TSU) in San Marcos (STX) 3. Jan 10, 2009 - 4th Veteran's Melee (SP - STX) 4. Spring '09 - Katy Blades Veteran (KB - GC) 5. Almost Summer - NTX Jurassic (FIT) or REN tournament (However, unlikely given that NTX is hosting SN 2009).
That is a Texas-size Veteran's Circuit that will cause envy in any other region of the country.

JoseJose, I can't hold my only tournament I get as a Veteran's only. If I get another weekend then I will be able to host it. I have ovr 100 youth, and about 20 adults. What would you do?

Augie:
Query.
Did you get the unused date in June?
I know Nicole & Rachel were lobbying for it. (Yeah, I know her password, but I don't read my wife's email... It's a trust thing & she's still at work.)
I had my fingers crossed SOMEONE would use that weekend.

Augie, Do a 2-day weekend tournament: Katy Blades Youth, Junior and Veteran. On one of the two days, hold all the 3 Veteran Combined Mixed Events. We are low maintenance and only need 2-3 strips. Jose
