Never thought I'd say this but, here's to the local division EC for sponsoring a referee seminar in conjunction with the Matt Madness tournament this weekend. My understanding from one local coach and one attendee to this event is that the division itself is covering Gary Van Der Wege's expenses and charging the attendees nothing. (Yes, of course, if they want to be observed they need to referee at the tournament, but that is the same everywhere.) I think this is exactly what the Gulf Coast Division should be doing: find a local fencing "need" and kick in the resources to fill that need. We need way more referees than we have and I have only noted 3-4 really regular new faces lately. Facing facts, at local tournaments who do I see? Well, we have Mike Ross, but he is the exception. Who else? Rachel El-Saleh Davis Jno-Finn John Trojanowski Joel Breedlove plus the 3 or 4 newer faces (mostly they appear to be South Houston or St. Thomas types) (Kudos however to Andrew Nat for stepping up to help referee a few tournaments back. Haven't seen him referee in awhile). Guys, this ain't enough. Sure, if BCFA is host I may see Oleksii and/or Delfina referee. If Katy Blades hosts Augie pitches in. The same at Alliance. The problem is that we need referees who are not coaches. At tournaments, the coaches are expected to coach.

It was a good turn out. Kudos to Gary for his work. A few fell by the wayside as the night wore on, but maybe next time.

So how was the turn out?
How did the trainees do on the test and the practical/observed referee-ing?
Who ARE our newest local refs?
