This was excerpted from something in my email. For context, the rapier fencers (the ones who use fencing weapons or schlager blade weapons and fencing in a style derived from Renaissance & 17th Century styles, have frequently been less supported in some SCA circles than the armored knights types. The area which takes in most of Texas, however, has been one of the hotbeds of rapier fencing. This prologue in italics should be taken as the words of an outsider, albeit one who reads a lot of SCA posts. Words from within, below...
At last populace, the discussion turned at one point to the Order of the White Scarf and the various arguments about there being a Rapier peerage. At one point someone (I'm bad with names) mentioned Don Tivar Moondragon saying, when the idea of a Rapier peerage comes up, his quote is "We're making knights!"
What he means by that is that, in period, a person in the 16th and 17th centuries who did the exact same stuff that a knight would, but they did it with a rapier, were elevated to knighthood. So while his argument sounds negative, Don Tivar believes that the Rapier peerage should be KSCA. It isn't going to happen. I'm sure he knows that. But he'll stand by his guns on this issue.
Personally, as a White Scarf, as I said that night at populace, I would never change my White Scarf for a White Belt. No disparagement to Knights or their squires, in fact I have great respect for what they do. It's just that I'm a Don! Order of the White Scarf of Ansteorra (I would never have take a scarf from another kingdom. PERIOD). If I had wanted a Knight's Belt, I would have changed tracks well over a decade ago.
