There are tons of films and TV shows involving "fencing" in the sense of period swordfighting (or even, contemporary swordfighting). My question is, what would be examples of modern, competitive, sport fencing in films or episodes of TV shows... USFA/FIE type stuff?

The obvious first name out of the hat is By the Sword, a 1992 or 93 film with Eric Roberts and F. Murray Abraham. While I can do without the absurd ending of an actual fight with sharps and the stray goofy scene, it was nice to have one film actually set in a modern, late 20th Century fencing salle d'armes.
I often think the overall film would have improved if it had stuck to the more soap opera-esque way it seemed to be going in the beginning with the relationships of the various characters within the salle, the fencing-as-visual-metaphor thing. Ah well, on a scale of 1-10 I give it a 4.

As I recall there is a fencing tournament at the beginning of Ring of Steel, which also duplicates the notorious Smirnov accident.

I remember an episode of the old "Magnum PI" series in which Higgins fenced electric foil... and wound up electrocuting his opponent!

There is a VERY short scene of the epee part of the competition at the beginning of the film Pentathlon. Other than that, it is definitely a movie to be missed!

The Hollow. A fencing class scene starts around 3:24.
Look closely and identify the cardable action.
Then run right out to your local Blockbuster and don't rent the movie.

Look closely and identify the cardable action. Then run right out to your local Blockbuster and don't rent the movie. Calling the action was easy. The fencer on the left crosses his back foot forward of his lead foot when he uses the judo flip on his opponent. Oh, and I don't need to go to Blockbuster. I can log onto Netflix and immediately NOT rent that movie.

One episode of the TV Series Crossing Jordan featured a case where the murder victim was a collegiate fencer. Jerry O'Connell who played the detective engaged in a fencing bout, sans masques (!), with the suspect (another fencer)!

The Spiderwick Chronicles also has a scene where a boy and girl are practicing sabre (it's always sabre) without masks.
Don't try this at home, kids.

Just FWIW, we have a number of high-school age fencers in our club. One at least is a major fan of a book series for young girls called The Calypso Chronicles. They are set in a boarding school in the UK. The lead character is seriously into fencing and hoping to one day make the UK Olympic team. When I mentioned this discussion thread, one of them told me about the series and sent me this excerpt... The Calypso Chronicles - Film Option Crossroads Films have optioned Pulling Princes, the first book in the international bestseller series Calypso Chronicles BloomsburyUSA - and the script is nipping along nicely... www.calypsochronicles.com a classic teenage-drama queen underdog in this endearing and energetic expose of English boarding school life, the first in a witty YA series by Brit chick-lit goddess O'Connell." - KIRKUS REVIEW Anyway, since this might become a movie (or movie series) that includes modern fencing, I include it here.

Another Spiderwick Chronicles comment. . .
The DVD came with a little illustrated storybook. The artist got it right by drawing the kids wearing masks while fencing, but the writer refers to the sabre as a foil in the text.
At least he didn't call it an epee. I would've *really* been insulted.

Film makers always remove masks or instill them with lighting you wouldn't normally have so that you can see the stars' faces (even if they're not stars) so that they don't have to show the whole scene as a stationary shot; if you had masks on them and no other extremely obvious way of telling them apart, making cuts with the cameras will only confuse the audience, in general. Or maybe they don't care, they just want cool shots of the star in the fight scene, and need his/her face showing. I can assure you that there is always a "But you never fence without a mask!" comment on set, which is always shot down. All kinds of shows also get their accuracy kicked all around with those dopey safety masks that are lit on the inside like the ones in the Abyss, or the ones you see in any film involving a chemical or biological hazard. You couldn't see crap if your mask was lit on the inside like that, except for your breath fogging up the glass. Just a comment, from the choreographer's chair. Not saying it's actually the best way to do things, just why it's done. Ann

I'm sure so many of ya'll watch E! entertainment or Style network, both carry Kimora life in the fab lane, her daughters were fencing on the show, it was cool, of course they are true hollywood people, but still cool to see young girls fencing. Kimora is also the the owner/ ceo of babyphat clothes, maybe she could designs some cool gear.

I can assure you that there is always a "But you never fence without a mask!" comment on set, which is always shot down. Then kudos to STNG (saw it on a re-run a few weeks ago) where Picard and Guinan (sp?) were fencing. They had on masks! And Guinan's hair was in a lame kind of thing. Been meaning to post about it for a few weeks. Busy.

Good to see my daughter, who doesnt fence @ least knows whats right & whats not watching me fence. Made me proud.
