I was looking over the agenda for the USFA Board of Directors meeting in about a week. I noticed that much of it was devoted to revising the qualifying paths to the summer national championships. One proposal eliminates the Sectional Qualifiers as a path for Div II fencers. Another restricts Division III fencers from those who fenced in the Div II quals to the top 30-percent D-and-under fencers who fenced in the Div II quals. I guess the numbers last summer overwhelmed everyone? Oh, and the document is here: www.umass.edu/rso/fencing/BoDAgenda102503.doc

Wow, the path to fence in Div III at the nationals looks a lot like the path for Div II. I guess the USFA is trying to discourage Div III.

I wouldn't say trying to discourage Div III as much as I'd say trying to keep the numbers manageable. There was in excess of 200 competitors in some events this past summer. That's a huge demand on strips, referees, and other resources at a tournament.

Well, wasn't the growth of fencing a goal of the USFA?
I guess we are victims of our own success. (Be careful what you wish for, etc...)

Well, I've already used the term "embarassment of riches," lately.
It seems we are, oftimes, the victims of our own success. We strive to get more people interested in fencing, in sticking with it...
...then the whole darn bunch shows up to fence!
Perhaps we need a lot more directors (and coaches) to keep up with this).
