So there I was, minding my own business...
Seriously, a friend of mine, a recreational fencer who often volunteers at those events hosted by the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority asked me to telephone one of their people, who had a question about about fencing. Fair enough. We are a niche sport and many folks have little or bad information about fencing. I figured it couldn't hurt to be helpful to a group like HC-HSA (best known for operation Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center downtown).
It seems the person at HC-HSA wanted to know how much "room" (i.e. area) is required for a fencing tournament. I explained the dimensions of the piste and how the competitors are broken into pools of 5, 6 or 7 fencers per pool. Basically, I advised that the area needed depended on the number of entrants.
She explained that a Mexican national sports umbrella group (I'm guessing something akin to our USOC) was intent on holding competitions in Houston, Los Angeles, maybe other cities. They would be seeking Mexican-American athletes in many sports (fencing among them), athletes that might consider competing under Mexico's aegis. It sounded very reasonable and I asked to be kept advised, since this might be interesting to attend as a spectator.
She stated they anticipated 30 fencers. I suggested that any high-school basketball gym probably had sufficient room for an event with 30 fencers.
She thanked me. She stated she thought the area they were requesting for the fencing event seemed a bit... much. I asked how large an area they had requested. The answer:
100,000 sq ft!
