I have always felt katanas become the weapon of choice for this type because:
1.) of all the movies, comics, & etc., that deal with its supposed superiority to all other weapons and ones with a mystical/magical nature (if you're not going to practice, magic seems like a good fall-back); and,
2.) many of these are sold already very sharp (again, less work for the new owner).

Man gets out Samurai sword in argument with son Janie Porter 11 days ago Tampa, FLSpring Hill, Florida - A Spring Hill man was arrested after allegedly threatening his son with a Samurai sword during an argument. Deputies were called to the house on the 6,200 block of Kimball Court on July 3. Herbert Theodore Jones, III told deputies the argument began when his son refused to give him his phone. During the argument, Jones said he grabbed his son's personal belongings and threw them out of the house. After that, he admitted to going to the master bedroom to get his Samurai sword from underneath the bed. "He raised the sword chest level in an attempt to intimidate [his son] into giving his phone back," according to the arrest report. After that, the son allegedly grabbed Jones in a headlock and Jones bit his son to get out of it. The son told deputies the argument started because he was playing video games and because he'd had his father's phone. Jones was arrested on domestic violence and aggravated assault charges and transported to the Hernando County Jail. The son had bruising on his right side and a minor scratch on his left shoulder.

A third suspect, Romel Garcia, was arrested on July 2 by Hernando County sheriff's deputies. When they served a search warrant on Garcia, 43, of 3114 Keeport Drive, Spring Hill, he charged a SWAT team member with a samurai sword and was subdued, a report states.
Romel Garcia was arrested in Hernando County on charges of possession of a stolen gun, possession of a defaced weapon, grand theft and aggravated assault of a police officer.
The two New York men - Romel's brother Carlos, 47, and 39-year-old Santos Garcia, no relation, are accused of buying and reselling 13 firearms.
