I think this would be something to be brought up at the meeting before the first day of SN.

I think that someone from Texas bidding to host Summer Nationals would help a lot.

How does one even begin to bid on something like that.... So, The USFA doesnt have someone that actively seeks out approprate locations? And I find that this disscussion is kind of simular to the discussion going on in the Sectional Section about the hosting roatation.
Dont they have a Rotation schedule were every other year, or every two years, Summer Nationals is suposed to be in the middle of the country... I know its been skipped since like 2003 but I thought AT LEAST IT WOULD COME BACK BY NOW (2008)!!!!

Why not contact someone at the national office instead of asking us to speculate?

I guess i didnt know that i was asking for speculation so much as a working theory. I guess I un-wittingly thought someone just had a reason.

I was told by the bidders that Houston had bid on all the major events, so Texas being passed over is not a lack of bidding in the area. Before I was told that the last Austin national group burned some bridges for nationals, so we just may be of the rotation in this area. Charlotte, Sacramento, Miami, San Jose is definitely east-west-east-west. The Houston Sports Authority puts in bid packages for our area, and they do a very professional job. They make certain that we have volunteers, and pull them from all sports if needed. They also take very good care of their volunteers after the events.

As someone who has been involved in multiple bids for different national events over the years, I can assure you, the process has gotten a LOT more complicated in the past few seasons. There are both positives and negatives to the newer processes, and I'm led to believe that its only going to become more so. Expect a lot of things we're used to taking for granted about national events to change...

As it was related to me, the first Summer Nationals in Austin was a real community effort among the Austin clubs. The second one was spear-headed by Gary at Round Rock. Feelings were hurt regarding how this was done, leading to a dearth of volunteers. I don't know any specifics as to what happened or who's feelings were hurt (or even if they really were), but this is my limited understanding of what happened.
Additionally, there were issues with the housing of referees. Not as bad as Sacramento, but some things with shuttles and rooms not being available that were supposed to have been.

I just happen to be emailing Christine Simmons back and forth at work and happen to have this conversation --------- ME - SUMMER NATIONALS 2008 IS IN SAN JOSE, CA??? again............. I thought there was some kind of balance in the Summer Nationals Rotation. What happened to summer nationals happening in the middle of the country? Is this not a rule that its supposed to be being adhered to? HER - Christine Simmons <christine.simmons@USFencing.org> wrote: No, there is no such rule. I do have bids in from Chicago (Rosemont, IL) for 2010 and from Dallas for 2009 and 2010. If you would like to have a more elaborate discussion on how venues and cities are determined, please stop by Check In at Summer Nationals. By the way, when was the last Summer Nationals in San Jose? I have been here five years and we have not been there. ME - Maybe it was a NAC in san jose .... yea. But where was summer nationals before atlanta last year? It was in California again i beleve..... It just blends together to me because they were both in a city thats kinda boring... HER - It was Sacramento in 2005. If you have any ideas of locations in the middle of the US, please let me know. Denver is too expensive for 12 days and Kansas City is too small. I am all ears if you have an idea. ME - i might be bias because im from here but,,,,,,,,, AUSTIN TEXAS AUSTIN TEXAS AUSTIN TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!! AUSTIN TEXAS AUSTIN TEXAS AUSTIN TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!! But Chicago sounds fun too...... New Orleans is probably still not safe still right? But that would be funnnn!!!!! But anywhere in TEXAS IS GREAT! HER - I like Austin! ME - Ive heard roomers around Texas that, Texas or rather Austin will never have a NAC or Summer Nationals again because something that happened at the Summer Natl's in Austin years ago.... They just say it was Run badly or somthing and its Austins fault... Would you happen to have any clue what im talking about? HER - No - it had nothing to do with Austin but rather it was a year of growing pains for US Fencing. We ran events with over 350 athletes and the first five days went until after 2:00 am. It was a tough tournament and we made a lot of changes to the Qualifying Paths, number of strips, check in times/scheduling and increased the number of referees after that event. I had a bid from Austin for the 2008 Summer Nationals but the rental was very high and the hotel room rate was also too high.
