Last week I was briefly drafted into transporting some fencing gear to the Hilton Americas (next to the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston). It seems there was a meeting sponsored by the USOC. Executives of various national govenring bodies of member sports... like, say, fencing, were in attendance. It seems that part of these meetings includes those attending getting up close and personal with a sport. As luck would have it, one of those up for audience participation in Houston was fencing. I have updated the rogue Gulf Coast Fencing site with a few clips and snapshots from the event... The Rogue Gulf Coast Fencing Website

Down, boy.
Haven't you ever helped a newbie adjust their cuissard strap before?

That is why our sport has such problems. The fencing community should have known about this and been able to participate to make it better. Then local officials would have been able to see that we have locations across the city and county. Instead there were no local ties.
That is a terrible job by Michael Massick (sp?). He did the sport a disservice instead of a service and does not know how to market.
We have many good clubs in town and could have developed many relationships from this like we did in 1986 from the Olympic Festival. The issue then was that we had two or three active clubs. Now we have a good base and growing. What a waste of talent and time.

On the one hand, as schlager7 noted, it was a USOC function, not a USFA function.
On the other hand, going with katyblades' post, Mr. Massick of the USFA was a participant. He could have done some point work (presumably he can acquire a name, phone number and email for pretty much anyone in the USFA).
As well, a mass email to all of us along with posts on the division site the rogue site and here to let us all know of the event would be nice. Mid-day on a working Thursday was probably out of the question for most, but I think a lot of folks would have ferried equipment and stood by to suit up newbie's, etc...
Perhaps even dinner & drinks for our visiting Exec, the two pentathletes and Ms. Zimmerman along with such others as etiquette and politics deem appropriate. I'll bet the division could cover our guests' tab, if nothing else. Give them a chance to speak to us about... whatever.
While hardly a catastrophe, it did seem like a missed opportunity.
