From the FIE site, FNet and several other posting places:
The FIE Congress, which met on 24 and 25 November 2007 in Madrid (ESP), unanimously decided that as of 1st January 2008 the use of wireless apparatus and masks with transparent visors will be compulsory in the following women’s and men’s foil competitions:
- Individual events of the Grand Prix competitions, World Championships and Olympic Games, from the table of 32 onwards;
- Team events of the team World Cup and of the World Championships, from the top 4 or 8 teams;
- Team events of the Olympic Games, from the beginning of the competition.
In order to make it easier for this decision to be put in place, the organisers of the Grand Prix and team competitions at foil are exempt from paying the FIE their organisation rights for individual and team competitions for the 2007-2008 season.
Regarding the wireless apparatus, the organisers must contact the Ukrainian company STM.
They must also ensure that the fencers have the option of buying the masks with transparent visors at the competition venue.

Aldo, you might add that they agreed that the bib would become target in foil. That probably will effect the local fencers sooner...

From King Rene I:
Dear President,
Mask with transparent visor in foil
The FIE has received the information that a Venezuelan fencer, wearing a mask with a transparent visor, was injured during an épée training session in Venezuela. The FIE therefore immediately asked for a detailed report of the incident, several times, but without success.
Mr Eduardo Dos Santos, President of the SEMI Commission, took over making the request, equally without success.
The President of the FIE, who was present at the Grand Prix in Doha (QAT), spoke to the Venezuelan fencers, but they were unable to provide any further information.
As the exact circumstances of the accident mentioned above need to be investigated, it has been decided that the obligatory use of the mask with a transparent visor in foil is temporarily suspended.
In addition, it was noted during the GP in Doha that the actions in épée are becoming more and more violent, and therefore more dangerous, and that some of the blades used were extremely rigid.
It is therefore expressly asked that:
- the referees seriously sanction any violence and offence against good sportsmanship;
- the organisers of the competitions check the flexibility of the épée blades
Sincerely,
René Roch
President
