One of the largest Grand Prix events in the World Cup season, the men’s foil Challenge Rommel, took place this weekend in Paris, France. In the individual event, one of the youngest competitors, Alexander Massialas (16, San Francisco, Calif./Massialas Found.) reached the top 32 by defeating Suguru Awaji of Japan 15-11 in the table of 64. He was knocked out of the competition by Awaji’s highly-seeded teammate, Yuki Ota, in a 15-10 bout.
In the team competition, the young US team started out the day seeded seventh, but lost 45-25 to an increasingly impressive team from Great Britain. In placement rounds, the US men defeated Israel 45-30, lost to Austria 45-38, and then lost a real heartbreaker to Poland 45-44 to finish 12th.
US Cadet fencers took up the challenge this weekend in London, earning four top-eight finishes at a European Cadet Circuit event in London, UK. Geoffrey Loss (17, Laguna Beach, Calif./Avant Garde) and Peter Pak (15, Roslyn, N.Y./Manhattan FC ) placed fifth and sixth in the Under-17 Men’s Saber event, and Sage Palmedo (14, Portland, Ore./Oreg. Fenc. Alliance) and Alexa Antipas placed fifth and seventh in the women’s event, both fields that contained some of the best young European saber fencers.
