I am moving this thread to "Tournaments"--did not belong under Clubs. Also want to be sure I get your input:
Veteran Fencers: As I have mentioned to some of you, Woodlands Fencing Academy intends to host several tournaments next season. One of these will be a Veterans Fencing Weekend. Since this will be one of our first tournaments, I would like your thoughts on how best to attract (and satisfy) our Veteran fencers from the Gulf Coast and neighboring divisions. How many folks can we expect? What events should we have? Mixed events? What works and what does not?
We have some of the finest veteran fencers in the country and I want to be sure we get it right. We also have had much interest in regularly scheduled classes for veterans only and we will begin these classes on Thursdays in August.
Your thoughts are appreciated! Leslie

Leslie,
The formats that have best succeeded are Mixed weapon events that are spread out throughout the day to allow Veteran fencers participate in two or even three weapons. Having the opportunity of Women's only events is also encouraged. You might want to hold an event if a critical mass of 4 or 5 fencers signed up. Veterans are able to socialize despite having to drive for an event. Scheduling a nearby dinner could be impromptu or part of the tournament.
I suggest that you talk to John T. about other suggestions. Regarding the ability of adding an event to our exisiting circuit, it should be likely. The past few months have been difficult for me because of a new position that I took at our University. I am directing a program for few dozens of dual doctoral degrees. John T. and Curtis Hardy (Darwin's Dog) will be planning the schedule for 2011-12. The FDL at CLFC, Veteran's Melee at Salle Pouj, and two other tournaments (one could be in San Marcos and the other at your facility) could round up the season. In prior years (NOT 2010-11), I had been asking for $80 per tournament to contribute for end of season medals/trophies.
In other news, the San Antonio Fencing Center and the other clubs fencing there (i.e.: Salle Pouj, and Olympian Fencing) are moving to a brand new facility that is larger this weekend.
Regards,
Jose

I don't have anything to add other than what's been said, but I love the idea of more vet tournaments and perhaps some regular vet-fencing sessions at local clubs.
