Hello,
Before I begin, let me say that I have not been directly told this, but instead have found this information.
SWIFA #4 will be hosted by A&M CC on April 21st Sunday, April 22nd at Jowers Gym, Texas State University - San Marcos.
I do not yet know if there will be a second day for individuals.
Side notes: I am Daniel Johnson, the Fencing President of Trinity University and recent temporary SWIFA secretary. I have not been forwarded any information to act in anyway however, and so am trying to do the most I can. (If someone could accept me into the SWIFA facebook page I would at least have a little more use.). On the SWIFA facebook page (which I can read just not comment on) A&M CC mentioned they need someone to run the computer. If the program/information is forwarded to me in advanced (so I can make sure I can use it) then I would be willing to run the computer at the tournament.
Finally, if someone has the SWIFA email list, could they please send me it so I can update everyone? my email is djohnso4@trinity.edu
Let's get as much known as possible

Hi, Daniel. This is Grace Buchanan, the volunteer fencing coach at TAMUCC. Right now we are trying to work things out with SWIFA4. The problem is that there is so much red tape with TAMUCC, and since I am not a part of the faculty, I have no pull there. My fencers have met with the school twice trying to answer questions in regards to the details of SWIFA4. Today I finally broke down and went to the university to try to explain to one department what SWIFA was, and what we needed to host the tournament there. I was told that I needed to address a different office (this one being the third). Thus, tomorrow morning I will miss work once again to visit the university where hopefully, we will get permission to host SWIFA4. The reason I have not posted anything prior to now is because we do not have permission from the school. We have been trying to get it since the Friday of Spring Break when we heard that UT could not host it. So... I will announce it when the time comes, but for now, I have no idea what will happen to tomorrow when I speak with the "Outreach Department". I have a bad feeling that since the paperwork they gave us TODAY says we have to ask 45 days in advance, and that we must have a $1,000,000 insurance certificate means that we will be unable to host the tournament.

Here is the word for now. TAMUCC is trying to host SWIFA4 on April 21. There will not be a second day of fencing due to the fact that most of our expense will be for referees that are from out of town and leasing the gym. We will be stretched beyond our means to do SWIFA4 alone. We "tentatively" have the gym, but are still awaiting final approval along with a proposal for us to host the tournament there. I spoke with Kyle today. He said for me to announce this, and encourage all of you to start making plans to come since many of you need time to get cash allowances from your schools. When I do get word back from the university, I will post it here. One of their stipulations is that SWIFA have insurance. Kyle and I are working on that. We are very lucky they waived the 45 day notice! The meeting went better than I expected. I just hope they do not expect an exuberant amount of money to lease the gym...

Fencing League @ TAMUCC will not be able to host SWIFA4 because the university wants $1300 to use their gym...

Grace,
You guys made a valiant effort with not near enough advanced warning in which to pull all the disparate pieces together.
You fought the good fight and fought it well.
I look forward to working with you guys in about 3 1/2 months.

I spoke with the Texas State club officers right after hearing back from Grace about the fee TAMUCC wanted for their gym.
Texas State has a gym available for free on Sunday, April 22 and they are willing to help TAMUCC fencing host SWIFA #4 at Jowers then. We're waiting to hear back if TAMUCC fencing can work with that.
And you are right, Schlager, Grace and her team have made some heroic efforts after this was dropped in their laps at the very last minute.

Looks like we will work with Texas State to host it. I can hardly wait to write the article for the TAMUCC paper..."Fencing League @ TAMUCC hosts SWIFA4 at TEXAS STATE!?!?" That will be interesting... very interesting, indeed. We look forward to working with you, too, John. I am sure we will have some fencers that want to fence The Games as well.

Daniel, will you still be willing to help with the computers? I plan to bring my laptop and a printer along with papers run off that Matt suggested we have in advance. I think it would be best for someone that has run the computers to be in charge of it, but I would be very happy to help you in any way... Texas State has a gal that they think will help, too. So, with three of us, it should go alright.

That will be interesting... very interesting, indeed. It will certainly raise some eyebrows, Grace! Use it in a positive way as a teaching tool for the Admin at TAMUCC. They have no experience with fencing or SWIFA and just don't understand... yet. But it just goes to show what extreme hoops you and the fencing team will go through to fence and compete. They'll figure it out in due time. Texas State Admin knows that lesson very well. After all, we've been doing it here since they were called Southwest Texas State... as you personally well know!

I guess it's time for me to change the date in the topic header to avoid confusion. ;D

This is a late response, but I think that it would really be great that whenever clubs host SWIFA tournaments (especially at other schools, like TAMUCC is doing at Texas State), that enough documentation can be saved and provided to the Dept. of Rec. Sports at the hosting schools...so that they can see what a great thing these tournaments are. Hopefully that will make these departments friendly to fencing clubs like TAMUCC's Fencing League.

Plan to stay for the Annual Team Meeting following the end of fencing Sunday. Some of the items on the agenda are officer elections, a couple of rules clarifications, upcoming competitions for the 2012-2013 season, and a discussion on how to fix the current rotation system... which has proved very problematic this year. www.facebook.com/groups/256812661034771/346601998722503/

For the record, I sent in a really cool letter to the editor at TAMUCC's Island Wave newspaper about SWIFA4. I have no idea if they actually published it. None of the fencers have told me anything about it... Such is life.
