Does anyone know at all if it's possible for High Schools to start participating in SWIFA? I know it was designed for colleges, but I think that in general, high school students have more free time. Also, perhaps then Jerry Dunnaway or Scott Brown would be interested in taking over the upcoming administrative vacancies.

While I think that it would make a lot of sense for there to be some type of regulatory structure to encourage inter-high school competition, I don't think expanding SWIFA to include them is the way to go.
As much as I want to see SWIFA continue, it seems that most of the college clubs in the area are too dependent on other people to keep SWIFA continuing. Until that's addressed, I don't see SWIFA being viable on a long-term basis. The clubs need to find a format that they're willing to support from an administrative sense and by expanding to allow high schoolers so that someone like Jerry or Scott takes over the administrative aspects just allows the status quo to continue. I think the issues SWIFA has with developing a viable mechanism for getting the member clubs involved needs to be dealt with first.
Additionally, I think the high school clubs are better served with an organization that specifically deals with them and their needs.

Let me preface by saying I know jack about SWIFA...
BUT, I would think high schools would more likely take fencing into UIL or some similar format.
I'm curious, since the SWIFA website gives little info and their Yahoo group is restricted to "admins"...
What schools send fencers to SWIFA meets?
Also, a Divisional Qualifiers, I heard talk that SWIFA, next season, might try to include several additional schools.
I even heard talk (paging Grace Haberzettle!) of inclusion of a university branch in Corpus Christi.
Anything anyone can add?
As to Dan's comment, please correct me if I err, I would think one problem is that, given student turnover, what is needed is a permanent or semi-permanent faculty member (like, say, a fencing coach) who would be the continuous presence for SWIFA contact.

Paul Schimelman has been the existing faculty member, but I think he's getting tired of it.
The whole problem is that there needs to be a Finacial Officer because SWIFA was recently incorperated. Now we have tax forms to fill out and accounts to manage and blah blah blah. Paul's been doing it but he's vacating the position after this year, whether there is a replacement or not.
Wes Phillips, current SWIFA president, said that if the position remains open that he will walk away; SWIFA will die.
This is only an issue if a FO is not nominated.
Oh and Schlager, a breif list of clubs that fence with SWIFA would include UT, UH, TAMU, Baylor, UTSA, UNT, Gary Job Corps, and Texas State (formerly SWTSU).

Okay, I found the "reply" button, which Dan is having trouble with. Perhaps it was something in the last post.
Let us see if he can reply, now.
Also, can someone repeat some of the school not currently participating in SWIFA that are considering or being considered?
If something happens at Lamar or down in Corpus, the Ivanhoe and Saberbobcat you have locals to fence against...
AHA! I looked at the posts as a "guest", after logging out. The "reply" button is gone if you are not logged in when you look.

Update!
SWIFA, the corperation, is going to be dissolved and the money in the accounts will be evenly distributed among the remaining schools.
From what I understand based upon what was told to me, SWIFA will become sort of an informal version of what it was (how this is possible, I don't know).
Does anyone else have any more information they'd like to share?

No. There hasn't been any mail in the UH account regarding SWIFA. Our new SWIFA rep is Jeffry Smith, elected without him having any knowledge of his initial candidacy! (that's what you get for not arriving at UH elections) I think you would know Jeff. He used to fence out at Clear Lake.

I remember Jeff well. He should know better, though, the same thing happens when you miss elections at CLFC, too.
You guys let us know if we can help.
