Quietly, doing things very well...
About 60 fencers attended the five days Winter Fencing Camps in all three weapons at Alliance Fencing Academy new home in Houston between Christmas and New Year. This was a collaboration between Alliance, Katy Blades, Knights of Trapani in the organization of the camps, with participation of fencers from other clubs in the Gulf Coast Division and outside the division.
The camps were lead by Andrey Geva, Oleksii Ivanov, Sabina Bazarbayeva, and August Skopik. Participants included 7 "A" rated fencers, 5 "B" and 7 "C" plus a good number of youths and adults. Each fencer had the opportunity to fence every day at least 30 bouts to 5 or 15 points. The traditional "tournament" during the camp (epee), had it been "rated," would have been an A-2 tournament given the quality and the results of the fencers competing.
In a recent interview with Giovanna Trillini, one of the most successful and admired foil fencer in the world, in Schermaonline, English section,
www.schermaonline.com/scherma/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=455&mode=flat&order=0&thold=0
she was asked what advice she had for young fencers who want to reach their highest potential. Her answer, "... try fencing to have fun. This is my recipe and it's something I try to practice every day when I go to the club. Apart from this, as in every human pursuit, constant dedication and do your best."
This was the scope and purpose of Alliance Winter Camps: fence and have fun. New friendships were established, old acquaintances were renewed, people from several clubs in our division came together to make this first Alliance camp in its new location a great success and the feedback is that everyone had a great time.
In case anyone wonders how much all this cost, the rates were $150 for Alliance members (including private lessons) and $200 for non members, with discounts for multi members of the same family. Fresh fruits, juices, beverages, and healthy snacks were also included free of charge. At the conclusion of the camps all participants exchanged gifts during a fun party attended by all and by many parents.
For those who missed this great opportunity to fence, learn, and have fun, get ready for the summer camps. Fencing coaches from outside the division and from abroad have been contacted and will join Alliance camps before Summer National.
A happy and prosperous new year to all!
