In the referee section some time back we had thread on which referees announce la belle when pool bouts reach 4-4 or DEs reach 14-14 (9-9 for vets). I see Fencing Net is running a thread now directed at the fencers as opposed to the referees.
When the score is tied before the final point, do you salute your opponent?

I'm of an older generation. It is how I was taught and is a reflex with me.

If the ref makes a point to call it, or my opponent salutes, I'll follow suit, but I'm not big into the rituals.

It is how I was taught and is a reflex with me. Ditto for me. The funny thing is, it's an American tradition only...they don't do it "over there". When I fenced at BCFA we had a lovely young french exchange student (smokin, truly) and as an ever curious sort I asked her what it meant. Though I'de heard it stood for everything from "tie" to "the beautiful" she said it was simply the name for the 3rd bout in a best-of-three exchange. Now I'm sure someone is going to post something about this to make me seem a moron (too late-hah) but this was a lifetime fencing FRENCH chic, and that's what SHE said. That being said, I still always salute, my opponent ONLY, because one of us is about to die (lose).

And, when I direc... err... referee, I always call La Belle. And Petite La Belle for that matter.

I need a write in vote for sometimes. I'll salute when the rules tell me too, but I'm not that big into it if I don't have to. Not to say I don't do it reflexively sometimes.

I do it. It's just the way I was taught and it's habit now.
