Back when the Gulf Coast Division's only official site was a dormant site that had not been updated since 1999, I placed a page on the "rogue" Gulf Coast Division site where I listed the (then) current members of the division.
Since then, we have a new, official division web site, which our secretary, Matt, has kept quite current. I am particularly impressed with his swift attention to keeping current our membership rolls.
Clearly, my long out-of-date page is not necessary. I began to consider what to put on this page, so that it might still serve out community.
Here is my thought:
I would like to run a piece on a different member of our fencing community each month (fencer, coach, etc) in an article written by another member of our community.
There are several options. Some of the more obvious include articles where a fencer writes about their coach or a coach about one of their more successful competitors.
More interesting, however, might be a parent writing about their child, the fencer (or a young fencer writing about my mom/dad, the fencer).
One fencer writing about an adversary they always look forward to crossing blades with.
One fencer might write about the on and/or off strip hurdles and difficulties a colleague has overcome.
The articles could be biographical, in focus, or not. They could be done as interviews with their subject, or not. The piece by a fencer on a favorite rival might focus on the fencer's style, technique or persona on strip.
Basically, I would like to leave the style and format open enough that anyone might contribute. This is not to be written by yours, truly. I want the Gulf Coast fencing community to write about their own.
Given the prevalence of digital cameras and scanners, I could run a photo of the subject (and maybe one of the author).
All I ask is that people not write the usual promotional puff-piece or a diatribe against. I want this to give us a chance to learn about each other and, believe me, an article can tell as much about the author as the subject.
So, what do you think?
