I was updating the "Rogue" site and about to pull this notice Andrey Geva sent me as "old news." On reflection, I wanted it to still be accessible, so here it is:
Ten US women epee fencers represented the USA at the Cadet “A” International Tournament in Heidenheim, Germany, November 13 and 14. Of the girls selected from the top sixteen national cadet point holders, six came from Texas.
The Houston fencers were Francesca Alexandra Bassa (13), (Alliance Fencing Academy), Neely Brandfield-Harvey (14), (Salle Mauro Fencing Academy) and Stephanie Wheeler (15), (Alliance Fencing Academy).
The tournament attracted 206 women fencers from Germany, France, Russia, Great Britain, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands and USA.
Saturday, the field was reduced in three rounds of pools first from 206 to 138, then from 138 to 88, and lastly from 88 to 64. Those that made to the final 64 had to fence 16 bouts between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eight of the American fencers made the cut to fence the next day.
Sunday, fencing started at 9 a.m. with direct elimination with repechage from 64 down to 32. Five of the American fencers advanced to the top 32. Direct elimination from 32 with repechage promoted four Americans to top 16 and lastly two to top 8.
Francesca Alexandra Bassa of Houston finished eighth and Courtney Hurley of San Antonio finished second. The remaining fencers in top 8 were Germans, three of them, including the winner, from the hosting club.
Final placement of the American fencers:
2. Courtney Hurley San Antonio, TX
8. Francesca Alexandra Bassa Houston, TX
9. Kayley French Dallas, TX
16. Rebecca Moss Phoenix, AZ
25. Christa French Dallas, TX
34. Chandler Clay Philadelphia, PA
52. Neely Brandfield-Harvey Houston, TX
56. Katherine Lynch Atlanta, GA
76. Stephanie Wheeler The Woodlands, TX
101. Tess Finkel New York, NY
The American contingent became respected and feared during the course of the competition, in particular by the very vocal French fencers which were mostly eliminated by ours. Regardless, at the end of the tournament our fencers made many new international friends with whom they look forward to cross swords in the future. Team USA was accompanied by Andrea Lagan of Boulder, CO, in charge of the National Women's Epee Program of the USFA, and two American judges, Gerry Baumgart and Donald Alperstein form Colorado.
