We are all sad for the move of one of the nicest person, an elegant and tenacious fencer, and a great friend always ready to help, Suzanne Simpson, from the "balmy" shores of the Gulf Coast TX Division to that little place up north called Dallas. The loss of this division will be the gain of the North TX Division, but at least she will continue in the Southwest Section of the USFA!
Suzanne is moving to Dallas because of business and family reasons. She's been fencing for the last two years at Alliance Fencing Academy and she credits her now being #1 in the Women's Epee Veterans Combined Division of the USFA to Andrey Geva's coaching and her training with all the top epee fencers at Alliance. As much as she will miss us, we will miss her, her friendly disposition, her kind words, her even approach to any dispute, and yet remaining a tough competitor on the strip.
Suzanne's fencing career began in Houston in 1986 under Steve Farid at the Dad's Club YMCA in spring Branch. In 1988 the club merged with Claude Caux Club at Duchesne Academy. In 1991 this club merged with the Rice Fencing Club where Suzanne continued to fence until its demise few years ago.
Between 1999 and 2004, Suzanne was coached by the late Gerard Poujardieu Jr., at the Salle Pouj. In 2005, Suzanne came to Alliance and trained with Andrey and Andrey's "kids."
In her fencing career Suzanne between the late 1980's to the late 1990's finished 1st at Division Qualifiers in WE (most years). Her local and national palmares include:
1st in WE at Van Buskirk in 1991,
1st at Section Qualifier WE in 1991,
1st at Weider Memorial WE in 1993,
1st at Longhorns WE in 1995,
1st at Crescent City Open WE in 1996,
2nd at Marlborough NAC Div II WE in 1997,
1st at Duel in Dallas WE in 2000,
3rd at Fete de Lune MxE in 2002,
1st at Van Buskirk WE in 2004,
1st at CLFC open WE in 2005,
In the 2006-7 season Suzanne with an 8th place at Richmond NAC in Vet Combined WE and a 1st at Atlanta NAC in Vet Combined WE is the current #1 in points in both Vet 40 and Vet Combined WE. She is rated B-07 in epee.
We wish Suzanne all the best for her move and she knows that Alliance, Andrey, his coaches, and all the fencers will always welcome her back should she come to her senses and see that there is no contest between the little place north of Houston and the Big H-town.
I invite all to share their memories of Suzanne and wish her all the best for her career and her fencing!
Good luck Suzanne and bring home the gold from SN!
