S.A. fencer makes her point in Pan Am gold San Antonio Express-News Web Posted: 07/18/2007 12:43 AM CDTOriginal ArticleIn the decade since she began fencing, Courtney Hurley has traveled the world and earned international acclaim. Yet still she finds herself trying to grasp the magnitude of what she has accomplished. "All the time, I think what has happened over the years," said Hurley, who will be a senior at Warren in the fall. Hurley, 16, will have one more accomplishment to ponder after winning the women's individual épée fencing title Tuesday at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Hurley defeated Canada's Julie Leprohon 15-14, recording the winning point with 1:24 remaining. "It's very overwhelming," Hurley said by phone from Brazil. "I haven't quite soaked it in yet. It was very exciting. It's very awesome." Hurley's victory was the second in less than a year against Leprohon, 26, at a major competition. She defeated the Canadian fencer at the zone championships in 2006. "It was a lot closer today," Hurley said. "Very close." Kelley Hurley, Courtney's 19-year-old sister who will be a sophomore at Notre Dame, lost in the round of 16 to Cuba's Zuleydis Ortiz. The Hurleys next will compete in the zone championships Aug. 27 in Montreal and the world championships Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Both events are crucial in the sisters' bid to qualify for the 2008 Olympics.

I fenced both a couple of weeks ago. They were both sharp. Today, Kelley took Silver and Courtney took Bronze at the Panamerican Championships, which count toward FIE standings (unlike the Panamerican Games). You can read more at: www.fencing.net/forums/thread32048.html
