Then you should be perfectly qualified to work for the South Korean women's foil team, if the story on Yahoo Odd News is any indication.

Well, it's not like I didn't have enough time to look for shoes to fit my big, flat feet. I was 210T in Div 1 Epee. Threw out my back... again... the very first thing, and then proceeded to loose every bout in the pool. UGH!!! Guess my chiropractor will be able to afford that new bass boat, now.

I haven't been to a NAC in ages. I can't believe how they've grown!
I thought the venue was very roomy and spacious and the participants particularly civil. After some of the horror stories I've read on Fencing Net and other sites, I was expecting something much more, I dunno, tense? surly?
I came on Sunday to watch some fencing right after the marathon (I did have some issues getting in but I found the petite little lady serving as guide by the escalators to get me the rest of the way in). I watched for awhile, left for dinner and came back in more than enough time for the women's epee quarter-finals and onwards to the final.
After that I caught the tail end of the men's foil final. Wow, just wow.
All in all, I had a great time and appreciate everyone who came down to fence and the folks that set up this event.

Holy cow!!! This was my first attendance at any tournament higher than our own SW Section Circuit events, and was I ever stunned.
36 strips in some 9 pods plus the wheelchair area. In our section, the Longhorn is traditionally the largest (and people can correct me if I'm wrong), with 16 strips. That was way bigger than I expected, even though I'd been warned, courtesy of Ms. Harkey. Those wheelchairs looked mighty tempting after the first few runs through the venue to post!
Who, btw, was awesome all weekend, from someone who was by her side most of the time trying to learn what it means to be BC. It was amazing to see how much goes on up there, with referees, FOC, computers, tableau people, etc etc.
Met a TON of people - always good to see DavidSierra and MTD, and I finally met schlager7! Along with those, I met Mrs. shlager7, saw Jerry Benson, Brian Gibson, Oscar Barrera and his wife, Beau Brunson, Scott and Terry Harkey, Garys Spruill and Van der Wege... so many familiar faces. I was very surprised by how many people I knew there, though I suppose I shouldn't have been, given that it was in our home section. We'll see at Reno, if I manage to get there. Also, saw Nancy Anderson, Stacey Johnson, Sam Cheris, Yuri Gelman, George K., Christine Strong-Simmons, Dan Kellner, Corinne Green, Don Alperstein, and a whole HOST of others. I don't know how much actual politicking got done, but the names were everywhere.
Wow. I'm sure I have more thoughts, but I'm still absorbing the whole ungodly four-day experience. Remind me to be Much more experienced before I every try Summer Nats!!

Well, if either of her (enhanced) cheeks leaves the chair, I'll be sure to call it.

One of the biggest stories of the NAC-C, unreported as of yet, is that a South Texas Veteran Woman won the SILVER medal in Div. I - Women's Epee.
CONGRATS to Esperanza Madera de Barrera!!!
Way to go, girl!

Esperanza was great!
Of course, the South Texas Division has often shown how dangerous those veteran fencers can be on strip...

On a more humorous note, I got this in an email from Marty. I thought I'd share:
My favorite quotes heard, conversations or questions asked at the NAC this weekend in Houston:
1) “They called me to the bout committee and said I didn’t check in. Did I?”
2) “I didn’t check in by the time of closing, was I supposed to?”
3) “Hi, I’m from M.I.T. I know that 80% of fencers advance in epee. There are 139, fencers. So how do I figure out how many advance?”
4) “Are the previous results posted or are these the present results?” (asked at 8:30 a.m. on the second day)”
5) “I was paged to come to the bout committee table a few minutes ago. Should I go there?”
6) Visitor: I’m from out of town, what should I go see in Houston that’s different? Local: I would suggest you tour the Johnson Space Craft Center at NASA. Visitor: What’s there? Local: NASA’s Mission Control and Space Center Houston. Visitor: Is that in Houston? Local: Yes, Space Center Houston is in Houston, in the Clear Lake Area just south of downtown. Visitor: Is it different than the other Mission Controls?
7) Visitor: I need to register for today’s event. Local: Great do you have any I.D.? Visitor: I am from Hong Kong. Local. Excellent, do you have a passport or FIE card? Visitor: Here is my passport. Local: I don’t see your name on the pre-registration list Do you have an FIE card? Visitor: Here, I have 4 FIE cards. Am I one of them? (There was a different name on each FIE card. None of which was on the list of those pre-registered for the event) Local: None of these names are on the list for women’s saber. Visitor: I really wanted to register for foil tomorrow. Local: Please come back then.
8) “At the last NAC, my son made it to the finals and got mad at the director. He threw his mask at the director and was black carded. Does he still get his “A”?
