I stumbled on to this site in a round about way and it seems you folks have been at least curious about some of the SCA "stuff" going on. Since I am a SCA member, I can do what I can to answer questions and get info. Now for a couple of bits of informations based on reading some previous posts. The "greater Houston-Galveston area" SCA has a practice at UH Main Campus (It's about 4 SCA groups). It starts about 7:30 on Tuesdays. Use Entrance 13 off of Cullen and it is under the trees next to the parking lot. There is a Youth division for 12-17 year olds, you move to the Adult group when you turn 18. There is a major SCA Rapier event coming up on May 4-6 (the event is actually on the 5th) at Livingston Trade Days, Pedigo Park in Livingston, Texas. The website is: loch-soilleir.ansteorra.org/queens/William

I remeber there were (maybe still are) SCA groups at A&M and at Sam Houston State in Huntsville. I don't know if there was any cross over between their sport fencers and the SCA in those places.
I did see, about a month ago, a UH fencer post on Fencing Net that some of their group visited the SCA rapier practice at UH once.

There used to be what was called the "Battle Mound" at the Texas Renaissance Festival. During the run of the festival, different SCA groups would put on a fight/bout/melee (I admit I don't know their terminology) each weekend.
They also ran a booth with scheduled fights between paired fencers, but the last couple of years that has been the Valentine Armory site. They also put on a combat demonstration, choreographed, using (I think) the same performers that used to appear as THE DUELISTS.
Valentine DOES have a nice "museum" upstairs, as well.

I know in some places there are fencers who fence both SCA and USFA styles. Are there any that do both here?

None that I am currently aware of. I know that, since some SCA rapier practice is/was at UH, from time to time members of the UH club have stopped by out of curiosity. Katman or Cowpaste would be better people to ask about that, though.

Interesting thread. I have surfed the web and found SCA groups not too far from me who may have SCA fencing much closer to me here in East Texas than any modern clubs.

If your past interest was in competitive sport fencing, I think you will find what the SCA does to be significantly different.
That said, they have maintained active (rapier or light) fencing communities in many locations that the USFA has neglected.
Ultimately, whichever you prefer, some fencing is better than no fencing.
Good luck. Keep us informed.

I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN TO FENCE No problem. Tell us generally where you live (city, state, country) and I'm sure someone on this forum can give you a contact for a club/instructor.
