Oaky, so I just get home, plop down and mindlessly channel surf for a bit. What am I finding? Tonight's episode of Crossing Jordan (which, incidentally also stars former sabreur Jerry O'Connell of Sliders fame in a supporting role) involves the suicide or possible murder of a college fencer.
What were the odds?

Was it Mr. Green in the Library with a Saber?

No, but I DID finally see the soy milk commercial everyone was talking about on another thread. Also, O'Connell did fence a bit in the episode, he and his opponent SANS MASK! What kind of message does THAT send? Strangely, he fenced foil.

My rhetorical question is, "And just what have these little vignettes shown us about 'entertainment' reality?"
All aboard for La La Land....

For the fencers, WE can laugh about how "unreal" it is. WE can see where they are all so wrong in their depiction(s) of fencing. It's entertainment for the masses. The entertainment-style fencing's value lies in its ability to catch the non-fenicng public's eye and increase their awareness and curiosity about the sport. It is sad that the entertainment industry gets it wrong 90% of the time, but when a sport is starving for exposure, we have to take what we get. Zorro, Pirates of the Caribbean, Princess Bride- bring 'em on!
