Okay, I believe bobb121 can log in now, but he also has since advised me of two things: 1 - The Selberg seminar is a no go since Maestro Selberg no longer travels outside his home state. 2 - bobb121 is considering trying to organize something with Nick Evangelista, who does travel multi-state. Having read some of his books, I'd be interested in attending, bobb. You can put my name on your list. I'll PM you with my email, although everyone knows it).

I'm interested, but it would depend on who, where, when, etc.

Well, who is presumably Nick Evangelista.
Since it is bobb121, my first guess is it would be in Lake Jackson.
When would be likely determined once bobb121 knew he had enough interest to guarantee sufficient turnout AND was on a date Nick Evangelista was able to make the trip from Missouri.

I don't think they ever got Nick Evangelista down here, but bobb121 could correct me on that.

What style of 'classical' fencing do you guys do? Due some early confusion in the community, the term has been rather loosely interpretted. For instance, what M. Evangelista teaches is early 20th century sport fencing. He called it 'classical' to distinguish it from modern sport fencing. Masters like Crown and Martinez teach 18th-19th century fencing (the original fencing designated in the 19th century as 'Classical' - note the big 'C'). Depending on what type you are interested in, you will want to connect with Masters who teach that style. Clearing up that small fact can save you a lot of heartache later.

cfaustus, I believe bobb121 studies under Dana Andersen-Wyman, who was taught by Charles Selberg. I think this would place him closer to the Evangelista style of fencing.
I don't know much about fox.
For myself, there is virtually no classical fencing instruction that I can see in this area.
While he was down here, I did study under Richard Alvarez, who is a close friend and associate of Adam Crown. Richard has studied under Claude Caux, Michel Sebastiani, Jean-Jacques Gillet, Pierre LaCaze and Robert Heddle-Roboth. I primarily took foil under Mr. Alvarez, but also epee and sabre. (He also taught historical fencing, was a fight choreographer and coached competitive fencers).

I would be happy to discuss holding a seminar with any of you interested.
A possible course would be one or two day intensive French or Italian foil. I would want to do that much with a new group before tackling other weapons like smallsword, etc.
The fencing style of the CFS is this: Classical pedagogy, practical fencing.
We look to the 'classical' era of swordsmanship for the training and techinque. We then study fencing in the context of applicable/martial fighting. For us, fencing is a holistic approach uniting the proven science of fencing actions of both the body and blade.
Feel free to contact me personally if this is of interest.
Regards,
David Achilleus CFSSDA / Kabal Fencing

I am talking about traditional foil or modern foil. What people fence know is post modern foil. I have just contacted Maestro Carninghan about a 3 day clinic. I will post if I get a reply.

I just got a reply from Len Carnighan. He will do a 3-day workshop down in Lake Jackson. It will be a modern foil/epee workshop. All that are interested e-mail me at christopherwms@gmail.com

It will be a modern foil/epee workshop. If it is modern why post on the classical fencing board?

As I have said before, according to Selberg and Carnighan, the sport we know now as fencing is referred to as post modern fencing. Dry fencing with the 4 judges and head judge is know as modern, or traditional. I used the term traditional due to Evangalista's book.

I got the followinbg from bobb121 in my email. I am not sure why he didn't just opt to post it himself, but here goes...John, I have arranged to have a Foil/Epee Workshop with Fencing Master Len Carnighan May 19-21. Could you please post this and spread the word. It will cost $100 per person, and $50 needs to be payed in advance. Thanks, Chris P.S. Here is a link to his Fencing school which contains a mini bio of himself. saf.pair.com/

I copied Carnighan's bio from the website:
Len Carnighan has taught fencing at universities and clubs for over 20 years. He is a trained Fencing Master in foil, epee, and sabre; he holds a Master's certificate from the Selberg Fencing Academy; and he has held a Class 1 Director's rating from the USFA. Len has trained under many noted American and European fencing masters including Charles Selberg, Jack Nottingham (one of Aldo Nadi's proteges), and Eduardo Mangiarotti.
During his career, he has also coached at Cabrillo College, Freedom Fencers Club, Santa Cruz Fencers Club, Southern Oregon University, Lewis & Clark College, Portland State University, and Portland Community College. Len has taught at all levels and has produced top-rated national and international fencers.
Interest pedigree. IIRC, Nadi couldn't stand Mangiarotti...

I'll grant he has a nice background, but $100.00 and a 3-day weekend in an area not exactly known as a hotbed of classical/modern/whatever (non-USFA fencing) seems a bit ambitious.
Might I suggest your try something smaller. I don't know when the schools let out these days, but having part of it on a Friday is going to eliminate a number of the working adults.
I am not saying he isn't worth it, but I would be surprised if it drew more than 4 or 5 students at that price and length.

I have scheduled him for 5 hours on friday, 5 on saturday, and 4 on sunday. The $100 is for about 12 people. If I can get more the price will obviously go down. If that is the case, I will refund accordingly.

If I can get 30 people to sign up, it should go down to about $30 per person for the whole 3-day seminar.

I'm going to try, but first I have to see if I can get that Friday off. I am curious, but I have to work for a living.
